Kobina attended 3 secondary schools in Lagos, Nigeria; CMS Grammar School, the prestigious Igbobi College, and then St. Gregory’s Secondary school. He was very involved in sports, particularly football (soccer) and cricket, and was school Athletes Captain at St. Greogory's in 1964 and represented the Lagos Colony Athletics team in triple jump at the National Grier Competition from 1962-1964. He then went on to study at the famous Pavlov Medical Institute, Leningrad (now called St. Petersburg) where he obtained his Medical Degree and was among the second set of Nigerians to be awarded a scholarship to study in the former Soviet Union, now Russia. He later returned to Lagos to do an internship as a Medical Officer at the Island Maternity Hospital.

Kobina completed his post-doctorate training in public health at John Hopkins University in the USA, then started his first job with the World Bank as a Reproductive Health Consultant to the Jamaican Maternal Child Health and Family Planning Program. Upon returning to Lagos, Nigeria in 1981 he would eventually establish his own clinic, and then worked as a consultant and researcher for various institutions including the UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund, formerly the United Nations Fund for Population Activities), the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), and CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency).

Kobina is survived by his wife, his 3 children, 5 grandchildren, and his younger brother and sister.

May his spirit rest in peace.
