Tribute from
Prof. Aba Omotunde Sagoe.
DSc(Hon) MBBS, PhD, FMCPath, FNAMed
Matriarch Sagoe Family Foundation
There is a time for each one and everything. We believe that our God who set us on this earth has a route for us to follow if we listen to his will.
Papa, Kodjo, Kweku, Kofi were young boys in the 1950s with whom I had such lovely pleasant memories that make me smile and still see in my mind how we were always playing together, shouting, racing, having contests in the Old Yaba Road compound which then to us was a large compound. There were chickens, rabbits, Bingo the restless mongrel and the aloof crown bird. We had fun picking ‘fruit’, palm nuts, òfiò, mango etc and also grapes! in Aunty’s garden in Clifford St - now Murtala Mohammed Way. The boys and other friends rented bikes and cycled as far as the island and back. (don’t know whether they got parental permission for going that far!!) Lagos was not congested and was safe then.
The relocation of parents and many of us going into boarding schools - Igbobi College, Kings College, Queens College, MBHS and MGHS separated us for years. Each completed his or her professional studies remarkably well in universities abroad.
Mama Papa, Mrs MNQ Sagoe, was our favourite as we grew up with her expertise in baking and giving us snacks. We loved coming to Thorbourne Avenue and later Foresythe Road.
Papa, my medical colleague you excel in your profession, working worldwide with the World Health Organization and the United Nations in Demography, Community Health and Preventive Medicine. Indeed you brought back your expertise to Nigeria and your people. This period was good when the Sagoe family, cousins, friends, Olowogbowo Methodist Church and Choir were able to enjoy your very pleasant, friendly and really inclusive demeanour as we sit, chat and laugh.
For you, no doubt, relocating to Canada was God-given as we see the outcome in your family surround. Beverly, your dear wife, our beautiful Iyawo, I thank you for the love and care given to my brother. May the Lord strengthen and guide you with the best of health. Your children Michael, Ladipo, Temi and grandchildren will be your love companion and joy always.
We shall miss Papa, but that is the program of life on earth that we cannot change.
God is good. God is great.
Adieu Papa Kobina Babatunde Sagoe.
Rest in perfect peace.

A TRIBUTE TO
COUSIN KOBINA BABATUNDE PAPA SAGOE
8 Feb 1944 – 11 Dec 2024
Today, we gather from far and wide to celebrate the life of an extraordinary individual, a gentle giant and a man who touched the lives of everyone he met in diverse ways. Cousin Papa was a devoted family man, a skilled medical doctor, cricketer and eminent old boy of Igbobi College.
CRICKET
It is difficult not to draw a parallel between Coz Papa and the revered Clive Lloyd, Guyanese born Test cricketer and captain of the West Indies Cricket team from 1975-84 (the golden era of West Indian Cricket). Aside from being born in the same year (1944) they shared a similar stature, bespectacled visage and played as left-handed batsmen. Whilst Clive Lloyd pursued a professional cricket career and went on to oversee the ascendancy of the West Indies in the international cricket circuit, Coz Papa cut short his cricket playing years to attend medical school and pursue a career in Medicine.
He fondly recounted his first encounter with his Uncle Kwame (my father) on the cricket pitch in a match between his club, Nigeria Ports Authority and the Lagos Amateur Cricket Club (LACC) wherein his wicket fell to the ploy executed between the wicket keeper (his uncle) and the bowler on the opposing side. He later referred to the advice he got from his uncle after the game as “Cricket 101, Lesson 1.” Little wonder that he was one of my father’s favourite nephews.
MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Coz Papa bagged medical degrees in Russia and the United States of America at the Pavlov Medical Institute and the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. His distinguished medical career spanned over four decades working essentially as a Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Physician with multilateral agencies such as the World Bank, World Health Organisation and the United Nations. His working life took him to several developing countries in the Carribean and Africa. He was a consummate professional to the very end, giving his all to the advancement of medicine globally.
FAMILY
And yet, despite his many accomplishments and travels, Coz Papa’s greatest joy was his family. His background connection with the Carribean however remained when he got married to Beverley Jacobs, a pretty West Indian lady of Jamaican extraction. Their union was blessed with 3 children – Michael Kwesi, Ladipo and Temi.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and his love for his family was evident in everything he did. He was always there for them, supporting them, guiding them, and loving them unconditionally.
He was indeed a thoroughbred Sagoe who took on the role of the family historian to come up with the first family tree – a pioneering work which we continue to build on.
He served as an inaugural member of the Board of Trustees of the Sagoe Family Foundation from inception as the foremost member of the ‘Emenkiu’ branch.
NOBLE NIGERIAN
Coz Papa was an eminent old boy of Igbobi College and a member of the 1962/64 Set. He was the recipient of the Igbobi College Old Boys Association Merit Award in the field of professional excellence in 2022. Due to the declining state of his health at the time, he was unable to physically attend the conferment ceremony. However, such was the compelling nature of his credentials and accomplishments, that the National Executive Committee set aside protocol to have the conferment done in absentia by proxy.
The citation read at the occasion described him as follows: “A highly decorated gentleman, Dr. Kobina Sagoe wore the school colours as member of the Igbobi College Cricket and Grier Cup Athletics teams between 1961 and 1962.”
CONCLUSION
Dr. Kobina Babatunde Papa Sagoe may be gone, but his legacy certainly lives on. He taught us the importance of living a life of purpose, of passion, and of service to others. He showed us that with hard work, determination, and a commitment to excellence, we can achieve great things. He amply demonstrated the importance of family, stooping low from his towering height to congenially interact with the younger generation of Sagoes. I confess to being a beneficiary of this warm interaction as our kindred spirits connected severally especially over the last two decades. He was a firm believer in the truism of the quote credited to Maya Angelou, "I have great respect for the past. If you don't know where you've come from, you don't know where you're going." In his tribute to Uncle Jubilee in May 2008 he wrote.
“You’ve left the footprints in my heart about the primacy of FAMILY
And the urgent need to preserve the family history in digital format
So that generations yet unborn,
Can learn and know about their forbears.”
In closing, we say goodbye to a remarkable man (a true Lagosian) who dedicated his life to the profession that he loved and a history he cherished. His passion and dedication have left an indelible mark on the firmament of the Sagoe family. We will miss him dearly, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations of Sagoes and their descendants to come, even as we continue to live the values he taught.
Rest in peace, Coz Papa. Your innings may have been closed in the scoreboard of life, but you stand tall as a batsman and notable contributor to the Sagoe team tally reminding us all of the rich tapestry of our heritage. The heart of a noble Nigerian stopped beating. Humanity is certainly the poorer for the loss of this worthy medical and family ambassador.

A tribute to Dr Papa Babatunde Kobina Sagoe.
It was with shock and sadness we received the news of the passing of our friend and colleague Dr Papa Babatunde Kobina Sagoe. I have known Papa, as we fondly call him, for over sixty years. He was my senior in High school and there we developed an acquaintance which soon morphed into friendship and the beginning of several interactions spanning the ensuing decades. After high school we all shipped abroad to further our education. I went to the UK and Papa as I later learned had gone to the USSR. While there, Papa would find his way to Britain during summer vacations and I was privileged to see him as he regaled us with tales from the iron curtain. Things he would buy in the UK to take back, items that were scarce or in short supply in the Soviet Union. Soon we lost touch as life often has its own agenda and we seek greener pastures.
Several Years later I left the UK with my wife and baby son to live in Jamaica on a UN assignment. After a few years who would we see there but Dr Sagoe, now a newly minted Medical Officer for the Government of Jamaica. That was just great as it brought me closer to home, and Papa soon became an extension of our family particularly as he was still single at the time. Though he was based in the more glamourous North Coast and eventually in Montego Bay, Papa still often visited us in Kinston and we made it a case to visit him in” Mobay”. We always had great times, and his affability and keen intelligence were always welcome additions to our deliberations.
The green Camaro was Papa’s signature transportation. His Coral Gardens pied de terre was the centre of activities. The pool helped to keep that location churning with visitations from friends and even Embassy personnel.
Of course soon his bohemian existence could no longer hold and would come to an end when Beverly entered the scene, and next thing I knew the bells were ringing and a wedding was in the air. A very welcome news!
I was honoured to be named the best man on that occasions as friends and family from home and abroad came for the great occasion.
Often times I would come to Montego Bay on business and remember one occasion when Papa and I spent a memorable afternoon at that august location, now known as Magaritaville in Montego Bay, sitting on the pier and really just chatting into the night while watching air planes arriving and leaving Sangsters. Everything was on offer, drinks, politics, Nigeria, geopolitical trends etc. We had a blast. That was the Papa I knew- available, solicitous and kind. Then he smoked a pipe and he would diligently clean and load that pipe while he contemplated his thoughts.
As is the case, good things don’t always last forever, soon we all had to depart from Jamaica. Papa to Canada and then Nigeria, and we for the DR and then the USA. By this time, we had three boys and Papa and Beverly had begun to raise their family too. We had occasions we all got together in Nigeria and those were excellent times too.
I knew that Papa had some health challenges which we would talk about when he returned to Canada and I would send whatever I found it the way of medical breakthroughs to him for his information and comments.
In the spring of 2023 Andrea and I drove to Toronto on a family matter and made a point to visit with Papa and Beverly and see how he was coping with his ailments. That was a nice drive and I can still taste the chicken Beverly served us on that evening. As usual Papa remained optimistic and so did I as we discussed at length some newfangled medical interventions that may help him in the very near future.
I was not pessimistic and had hoped that Papa would be able to return to Nigeria where I hoped we can see one another again. Alas, that was not to be the case, as only last week the news of Papa’s passing reached me, and I was just plain out of words.
May his soul rest in perfect peace as we thank him for his friendship and the joy he brought to all who knew him.
We pray that Beverly and the children have the strength and understanding of knowing that he has gone to a safe place where pain and anguish no longer have power over him.
Ike and Andrea Okwesa

I knew "Uncle Babs" growing up in Lagos as always cheerful, kind and filled with enlightening stories. His description of what it was like to compete to represent your country at the Olympics was the most inspiring for me, mainly because of how humbly he narrated the ordeal of being frustrated at his performance not matching those of the world leading jumpers from other countries.
Uncle, your story taught me to use the best of the field as a yardstick of any endeavor - and I will forever value this life lesson.

*Tribute to Coz Papa* .
So sorry to hear that Coz Papa passed away suddenly.
He was my Senior cousin who I got to know better when he worked for the UNFPA in the early 90s when I did a lot advocacy work on Women's Health in the run up to the UN Conference on Population and Development. Our paths crossed again in Toronto when I moved there in 2012. The family welcomed me and Coz Papa was always ready
to profer advice and support as I went through several phases whilst settling down. I spent many interesting hours with the family when I was in town discussing politics with my rather progressive cousin who was not one for ostentatious displays. He had and shared many of the Goyea family's historical records which he kept from his grandfather and mother who was my mother's first cousin.
A proud Saro Lagosian in spite of many years away, he looked forward to coming "home" in 2025. He is still coming home, albeit not in the flesh. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
Condolences to Aunty Bev and all his children and grandchildren!

On Wednesday, my world fell apart with the most shocking and heartbreaking news—I lost Uncle Papa, my second daddy. Words can’t fully capture the depth of the pain I feel. You were more than just an uncle to me; you were a father figure, a protector, and a source of wisdom and strength. Even though we were often apart because of distance, you were always there for my mom, and through her, you were always there for me too.
I keep thinking about all the moments we could have shared, the conversations we could have had, and the laughter that could have filled the air if only we’d had more time. The regret is heavy because now it’s too late. You were always in Canada, not often in Nigeria, and I told myself there would be another time—another chance. But life has a way of catching us off guard, and now I’ll never have that chance again.
Uncle Papa, you were a rare gem—a man who gave so much of himself to those he loved. Your love, wisdom, and unwavering support left a mark on everyone who was lucky enough to know you. You had this way of making people feel seen, valued, and cared for, and that’s a legacy that will live on forever.
It’s hard to imagine a world without you in it. The thought of never hearing your voice again or seeing your smile is almost too much to bear. But I hold onto the memories, even if they feel too few. I’ll always remember how much you loved and cared for us, how much you did for my mom, and the strength and kindness that defined who you were.
Thank you for being such an incredible part of my life, even from afar. Thank you for showing me what it means to love selflessly and to always be there for family. I miss you more than words can ever say. I pray that your soul finds peace, and I know you’ll forever live on in our hearts. Rest well, Sir. You’ll always be loved and never forgotten.
Love,
Anuoluwapo

A Tribute to My Dear Brother, Dr. Kobina Papa Babatunde Sagoe
My dear brother, my beloved Uncle Papa—this is how I’ve always called you because, to me, you were more than just a brother. The 13 years between us made you a father figure in my life. From the very beginning, you embraced that role with love and devotion. You were my protector, my guide, and my steadfast supporter through every high and low.
You were always there, watching over me, making sure I was okay even when I couldn't see it myself. When I stumbled, you corrected me—not with judgment, but with patience, love, and understanding. You made sure I never felt alone, no matter what challenges came my way.
Now, as I sit with this heavy emptiness in my heart, I struggle to comprehend the loss of my second Daddy. It feels like having to learn how to live all over again without the steady hand that was always there to lift me up. The thought of not hearing your voice, not feeling your comforting presence, is almost unbearable.
But even in this pain, I find gratitude. I thank God for the man you were and the love you gave so generously. I am thankful for the wisdom, kindness, and strength you embodied. Your life was a gift, not just to me, but to everyone who had the privilege of knowing you. Your legacy will live on in the lives you touched so deeply.
I will miss you more than words can express, my dear brother. The gratitude I feel for you is as profound as the ache of your absence. Rest well, Papa. You have finished your race with grace and honor. Until we meet again, your love will remain in my heart forever.
With all my love,
Maggie
