Obituary of Mr. Spyros Gazetos
Aionia i Mnimi Spyros...
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Spyros Gazetos, age 49, on December 9, 2024. Spyros was a beloved son, husband, father, and friend, and his time with us was far too short. Born on May 21, 1975, he filled the lives of everyone around him with warmth, joy, and music.
Spyros was the devoted husband of Anna Gazetos (nee Kossivas) and the proud father of Tia, Thanasi, and Yianni Gazetos. He was a cherished son to Tom and Tena Gazetos and a beloved son-in-law to Kosta and Dimitra Kossivas. Spyros was deeply loved by his sister, Sandra Gazetos-Sheikh (Fouad Sheikh), and his sisters-in-law, Patricia Kossivas and Niki Kossivas. He was also a loving uncle to Niko, Dimitri, Damon, and Kali Kossivas, as well as Alex and Athan Sheikh.
From a young age, Spyros possessed an infectious spirit that left a lasting impact on those around him. He attended Edgewood Public School, where his love for learning, athletics, and music flourished. A natural athlete and speaker, he excelled in track and field and public speaking, winning numerous awards and representing his school in regional competitions. His musical talent began early, winning piano competitions and performing duets with his sister at annual recitals. At the age of 10, Spyros was introduced to playing the bouzouki, an instrument that would become a lifelong passion. His shared moments with his father, bonding over hockey and wrestling were among his fondest memories. His playful nature was ever-present, evident in his childhood photos where he often made funny faces. This trait continued into adulthood as he kept loved ones smiling during video calls.
As a teenager, Spyros attended R.H. King Academy, following in his mother’s footsteps. He became an active member of the student athletic club and played on the school’s rugby team. Spyros also continued his musical journey, playing the trumpet in the school band, and later discovered his calling as a bouzouki player when he joined the “First Generation” Greek band. His musical journey continued with bands such as Piriaki and Pavlo, and for over three decades, Spyros’ talent and love for performing graced stages across the Greek community, from the Taste of the Danforth to weddings, baptisms, and Greek festivals. Music brought him joy, and on stage, he truly came alive.
After high school, Spyros attended York University, which led to a successful career in Wealth Management. He worked at Nesbitt Burns, HSBC, and TD Wealth, forming lasting friendships and becoming like a little brother to many of his colleagues.
In 2003, Spyros married his beautiful wife, Anna, and together they built a family filled with love. As a father, Spyros was endlessly supportive, always there to help them with their homework, cheering them on at their sporting events, and beaming with pride at their piano recitals. His children, Tia (Sweetie), Thanasi (Big Guy), and Yianni (Baby), were the center of his world.
Spyros’ kindness, warmth, and positivity radiated to everyone he met. He had a unique ability to make people feel valued and special, often giving affectionate nicknames to those he loved. His spirit touched so many, and his music remains a lasting gift to all who had the privilege of hearing him play. Spyros was a beacon of light, a ray of sunshine in the lives of those around him, and his legacy of love, kindness, and music will shine brightly in the memories of all who knew him.
Spyros will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to resonate in our hearts. His music, which brought so much joy here on earth, will now bring happiness to the heavens.
The family will have a private funeral service. We are planning a Celebration of his life in the new year.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the MS Society of Canada in Spyros’ honour.
To celebrate Spyros’ life and legacy, the family invites you to offer condolences and share your cherished memories in the tribute book, so his children can truly understand the profound impact he had on all who knew him.
