I am writing this memorial tribute on behalf of our family, and especially my mother Alma, who passed away in 2022. My mother was Spyros' first music teacher and I know she would want to join us in expressing our love and condolences to the family of Spyros and all whose hearts are grieving at this time.
I first met Spyros as the adorable baby brother of my friend, Sandra. I remember thinking she was the luckiest girl in the world to have such a sweet baby brother come into her life. A few years later, my mom began teaching Spyros piano. I recall how much she loved working with him and how excited she was to nurture the talents of such a musical, sensitive little boy.
A special memory I carry with me is of Spyros at what might have been his first piano competition. He was only five or six years old and very anxious about performing. We were all concerned for him, but he courageously took to the stage and gave a brilliant, impeccable performance. The adjudicator awarded him first prize, and I remember this so vividly because it was the first time I cried tears of joy.
My mom was thrilled when Spyros also began studying the bouzouki, as she was deeply passionate about Greek music. She took great joy in Spyros’ musical evolution, feeling a strong connection to him that continued over time and distance. Years later, her granddaughters would grow up dancing wildly in her living room to the passionate music of Pavlo while she sang the praises of the wonderful Spyros. To her, he was more than a gifted musician — he was a kindred spirit whose kind, loving, and open heart filled her with admiration.
I know that Mom has embraced Spyros on his heavenly journey, and together they will continue to make beautiful music for eternity.
May the loving memories of all those who were blessed to have Spyros in their lives bring comfort and light to those who are mourning his loss. His light will forever shine in the hearts of all who knew him.
With love,
The Saarkoppel and Vowles Family
