Derek and Mike, and your families, our deepest condolences on the loss of your father. Uncle Bernie was such a joyful person to be around. He was such a great friend to my parents who will miss him very much. I remember your dad as always having a smile and a big contagious laugh. He was always so welcoming and so exceptionally kind. I will forever have fond memories of him, as I still do with your mom. Frances and Daniel Chang

Bernie was a large presence in my life, and I don't mean that just literally.
Back in Kong Kong in the early 1960s, he and his then fiancee and my good friend Marlene were planning to emigrate to Canada and urged me to do the same. When I eventually arrived in Toronto, Bernie, having newly arrived here himself, did not yet have a car. He asked his friend David to to pick me up at the airport. David obliged. The pick-up was successfull, and David and I were married 18 months later. Bernie took credit for being the ultimate match-maker, and would regale his friends with this pick-up story over and over again.
Bernie was a joy to be around. He was always cheerful, happy and ready for a laugh. He made friends easily. He could always be counted on to help you, from buying a TV to buying a car, from fixing a window to fixing a leaky drain, not that he knew much about cars or fixing anything at all, but because he knew people in every field who were the best in the business as far as he believed.
Bernie, dear friend, David and I will miss you greatly. We need people like you to remind us how important it is to keep a positive outlook and to enjoy life, especially in this crazy world.

I first met Bernie Yen in 1976, when I joined the Toxicology Section of the Centre of Forensic Sciences. Although I was a junior medical technician and he was a court going scientist, he was friendly (as he was to everyone) and made me feel welcome. He encouraged me to pursue my studies and eventually I became a court going scientist like him. He used to take a group of us from tox in his car to a Dim Sum place at Broadview and Gerrard for lunch. He continued with this even after his retirement. He was well respected in court. I never saw him angry or upset although it would be easy to be in that situation in court and cross-examination. My condolences to his family. He will be missed greatly. James Wigmore, Forensic Toxicologist.

In Bernie’s time with the Centre of Forensic Sciences those were days, at the downtown locations, when the Tox scientists did it all - including method development, doing the analytical work in the lab themselves, interpreting results and providing expert opinions in court. And he did it all with style, looking impeccable in his tailored dress shirts - custom made abroad, he would tell us.
When I joined CFS, Bernie was a warm, welcoming presence. In my early years there in the Toxicology Section, he was very approachable, and sharing helpful tips, both professional and for life style in general. I especially remember it was wonderful to meet Bernie and Marlene together, they were so cordial.
Everyone enjoyed Bernie’s sense of humour at break time. I still can hear him ending some of his jokes with the punch line “... because Toxicology is my LIFE” and we’d all laugh with him.

I will never forget the many wonderful dinner parties and BBQs hosted by Marlene and Bernie years ago when I lived in TO. They were the most hospitable couple and so much fun to be around. Bernie had a big heart and good sense of humour and I really enjoyed our many dinners at the Royal as well sharing our love for good Chinese food!!!
My thoughts and prayers are with you Anne and Lucille and Derek and Micheal and your families at this very sad time. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Your parents will be greatly missed by everyone who knew them.
Sincerely, Dawna Winges, Kingston, ON

Although Bernie was not among those at CFS with whom I worked most closely, I remember him well. He was quiet, but thoughtful and there when you needed him. I never remember seeing him cross or angry, but always with a smile on his face.
What a way to go, peacefully in his recliner. I could wish it that way for all of us when the time comes.
Rest in peace, Bernie.

It’s so amazing that you, Mike and Derek, know that everyone loves your dad. Many like to use the past tense but I don’t because the love doesn't go anywhere-we still feel the love we have for him and your mom even though they are both resting in peace. Blessings they are together again. Deepest sympathies also from my parents Edward and Cecilia Chan.
