Obituary of Mr. Aare Ranken
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Aare Ranken on Friday, March 29th, 2024, with his family by his side.
Aare was born in Tartu, Estonia on September 27th, 1942, son of the late Karl and Salme Ranken. He and his parents escaped from the Russian regime when he was 2 years old and spent time in Germany and England before settling in Canada. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Diana, his daughters, Kersti and Lisa, and his 4 grandchildren, Braeden, Connor, Keegan and Katelyn. Aare will also be missed by his extended family, Geoff, Wayne and Sandra, Wendy and Don, Heather, Brian and Lilli, and his many friends,
Aare graduated from the University of Toronto and spent his entire career teaching chemistry at Western Tech in Toronto. He loved his sports - played volleyball, was a Charter member of Tam Heather and active in both Men’s and Mixed curling sections, and loved to be out on the golf course with friends. His daughters were his pride and joy as he watched them participate in dance and a variety of sports. ‘Poppa’ was also very interested in, and proud of, his grandchildren’s accomplishments. Aare would want everyone to remember that “Life is too short to drink bad wine”.
Many thanks to those friends who visited or called to talk with him, as he enjoyed discussing politics, current events, and of course sports. The family also appreciates the efforts of the staff at Scarborough Hospital (Birchmount) and all those involved with his home care.
Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday April 4, and a funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. April 5 at Ogden Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scarborough Health Network (SHN Foundation) in Aare’s name.
