Aare Ranken was a graduate of and a teacher at Western Technical-Commercial School. As such he represented the very best that Western produced in a student and the very best that Western could offer in a teacher. I taught with Aare for 32 years.
He in chemistry and I in biology. He was widely admired by his students. Many of whom went on to study chemistry in post-secondary institutions. He was also very active in extra-curricular sports activities organizing board-wide track and field events.
To Diana, Kersti, Lisa, and his grandchildren, I send my heart-felt condolences.
Aare my friend, rest in peace, until we meet again at our next Department meeting in a better place.

Thank you Aura for your wise advice , and your gracious entertaining with Dianna at holidays at #11 King Louis.
As others have said you were a real Gentleman , a great father and friend to all those who knew you.
Life is too short and I know Dianna and your family
will miss you terribly. I still can't imagine beating
you at ping pong or anything else ,,, Your students were lucky to have such a smart and talented teacher who helped them with the most difficult and abstract subject - Chemistry,
And on top of all that you were a a little of that
Wild and Crazy Guy. You blazed the right path in life, everyone knows that.

Aare, I am sad to hear that you have gone to that heavenly lab in the sky. I will remember you as will those thousands of young people for whom you opened the door to chemistry. Remember those post competition periods where you, I and Rudy would meet for a few drinks and analyse the latest track meet or high school golf tournament. You had a full, successful and influential life. Well done Aare, see you soon.

Aare and I were members of the Bloor West gang of four in our "Wonder Years" of the '50's and the '60's. I have great memories of our Friday nights at the local pool hall, or movies at the Runnymede followed by burgers at Peter's Restaurant. Weekends were devoted to Scouts, and Sunday band practices. During summers, and sometimes in the winter, we enjoyed camping adventures Muskoka (Kotkajärve), Udora (Jõekääru) and Elora (Seedrioru). These memories will always be with me.
Rest in Peace, Dear Aare

When I think of Aare I naturally reminisce about conversations over pints at Swirlers and its successors, playing golf, discussing curling. Aare was a class act, a true gentleman.

My sincere condolences to Diana, Kersti, Lisa, and all your family and friends. We have known Aare since January of 1973 when we became neighbours on King Louis Crescent. I remember when you lived across the street then moved beside us to where you are now. You were one of the first and longest dwellers of the street. It meant so much to me knowing you visited my Mom for a cup of tea and a chat. Not to mention all the yummy homemade treats you brought to her. You’ve been great neighbours and friends. Thank you.
We will remember Aare fondly and will keep you all in our hearts and thoughts.
Sincere condolences and lots of love,
Cathy Lico

Deepest Condolences to Diane, Kirstie, Lisa and the rest of Aare's family. He will be sadly missed. I didn't meet Aare until after he had his heart aneurysm in 1996. But we had many happy rounds of golf together and many times enjoying each other's company. He was always cheerful and was very proud of both his daughters' accomplishments. When we could no longer meet because of Covid and Aare's health we kept up the conversation over the phone. I will certainly miss his company.
