We were so shocked when we received Eric’s call to let us know of his dad’s sudden passing. We had spoken with George about two weeks before and he talked about coming to Newfoundland this summer and was looking forward to having a game of golf with Hugh.We always enjoyed his visits and the time we spent together. He always wanted to take us out for a meal and we can see from some of the other memories that we were not the only ones. However we did manage a few times to get ahead of him and give him a treat but it wasn’t easy. That was just George’s way he was so kind and humbled. On one of his visits to Newfoundland he was itching for a game of golf so Hugh booked a tee off time and they headed for the golf course.Part way through it started to get misty and a little later it started to rain. But these two carried on.Finally they noticed they were the only two golfers on the course everyone else had quit the game and head home but they still plodded on.When they finally finished their game and head up the ramp to the club house the only people left there were the staff who all broke into applause for these two crazy guys who refused to give up on the game they loved. We loved him and we will miss him so much and we will cherish the memories forever.
To his children and grandchildren know that he loved you and was so proud of you all.
Cousin Hugh Harvey and wife Donna

I was deeply saddened to hear about George’s passing. George worked with both my parents at the Bank of Montreal during the 60’s and 70’s. Throughout my life, George has been a pillar of support, and his guidance has left a profound mark on me.
George will be remembered fondly for his wisdom, humour, and kindness. His love for sport was only bettered by his love for his family and I always enjoyed hearing about all the exciting things happening with all his grandchildren in all the rinks and on all the fields in Southern Ontario. George always seemed to have a big extended family to support, and his nurturing presence touched the lives of many. It's heartbreaking to think that Carol, who brought so much joy to George, passed away at the end of last year before his own passing.
Their love and companionship were truly inspiring, and their memories will continue to live on in the hearts of those they touched. While I'm unable to be there in person during this difficult time, please accept my heartfelt condolences.
May you find strength and solace in the memories you shared and the love that surrounds you.
With sympathy,
William Schiestel

Our Friend George who never had a bad word to say about anyone ever!
As a result of a business relationship in the '80s I met George, and had the good fortune of our acquaintance turning into a lasting, cherished Friendship. George was one of a kind. His strength of character combined with his quick Newfoundland wit, amazing ability to clearly articulate many a story and his clear and strong financial mind were just some of his endearing qualities. At times just out of nowhere, quiet, unassuming George would transform into Willie Nelson, with a beard and a kerchief around his head on our COVID Zoom calls.
A number of years ago George and I took a golf trip to Ireland, along with two other friends and although the weather was less than kind to us we had the time of our life. The delight of having George as company was huge. Somehow unlike me, he never managed to never lose a golf ball. My count was well over 2 dozen!! (lol). George, Chuck Bartliff, Don Martin and I have been a regular ClubLink foursome for a number of years. Those memories will be treasured forever.
He was that man whose stories made us smile. George travelled to Newfoundland to visit his aging Father for years. His commitment, pride and love of Family was clearly expressed at our regular gatherings and dinner parties. He updated us on the various successes in sports, academia of his grandchildren and how his sons and daughter were doing.
I could go on and tell many a story .. that remain in my memory bank about a Friend who was just SPECIAL.

Jennifer, Geoff, Eric and families. We are very saddened to hear of your dad's passing. Only met him a few times in his younger years, but after your grandmother passed away we saw him more often. Your father and grandfather came out here to New Harbour, where your grandfather Bill spent a lot of time in his youth with my grandfather George, also your Grandmother and Grandfather spent their honeymoon out here with my grandparents (George and Mary Woodman nee Windsor) They came to our house for dinner after your grandmother passed, and we shared a lot of old pictures. After your grandfather passed, your father sent us more pictures of visits to New Harbour.
The last time I spoke with your dad was just after Carol's passing in December. We had a good chat and talked about what he would do now. He said he was in good health and that he would continue to play golf. We are usually in Florida this time of the year and he said if he came down we would get together for a round. He was also going to drop out to our home in New Harbour when he came back to Newfoundland. He was quite the gentleman, and we wish we had more time with him.
Our deepest condolences to you all.

George has been a part of my life for fifty-five years. Our relationship started when we were bond traders at Bank of Montreal where we shared our love of the job and respect for each other’s values. That business relationship soon turned into a deep and growing lifetime friendship. We golfed together, partied together and talked on the phone often about markets, sports, politics and our families. George never had a bad word to say about anyone and therefore was well liked by everyone he met.
He had a great sense of humour as was shown by his “gimmies” and “mullies” on the golf course. He was a risk taker and enjoyed being at the poker table. George truly loved his wife, Carol, and all their children and grandchildren. He was a very good man and I miss him terribly.

I extend my condolences to George’s family and friends. I have many memories of working with George at Manulife. I arranged for George to speak on a panel at a Mortgage Bankers conference in the US. The member introducing him said we had a unique panelist from Newfoundland! On a more personal side, Sheryl and I remember when Carol and George visited us for a members guest tournament at our golf club in Alexandria Virginia. The two lefties played golf and we had a wonderful weekend.
Rest in peace George.

Was transferred from Admin Manager Edmonton Main office to Domestic Banking as a Product Manager. After a year BMO developed a new product called a GIC which was to be administered by Treasury. Few there knew how branches worked I was moved to the 14th floor Treasury Division to get this product on the shelf in branches. George was the SVP of Treasury. Culture shock for me but was easily adopted by the group. The A/L Committee was the best experience any banker would want. The Department gave me an original FCIL Investment Certificate with the inscription “The Billion Dollar Man”. When I was transferred back to Alberta Division as Operations Manager.
Colin Evan’s and I along with George were on the BMO slow pitch team. Rank made no difference and we had a create time. After Colin, I had the second highest batting average. George could be counted on to hit the home runs to help us score. What a great person, colleague and manager!

George was a life-long friend. There is a picture of us when he was about five and I was about four years old. As teenagers in St. John's, we developed our tennis together at Riverdale Tennis Club. In 1961, George won the provincial men's singles championship and together we won the men's doubles championship. We also enjoyed many wicked, highly competitive games of table tennis in our respective basements and at Bishop Feild College. Later, at Memorial University, we joined a small fraternity that we called the Hexad. Some years later, after George had moved away to pursue his highly successful career, George agreed to be the godfather of my son, Matthew. More recently still, while George's father, Bill, was still alive, George would be a regular visitor to my wife, Jeannie, and me at our house in St. John's. He also generously took our out several times for a restaurant
meal in St. John's. HIs death, coming just months after Carol's, came as a great shock. He will be sorely missed.

To the Family of George Neal,
It was sad to read of Mr. Neal's passing. I was working in the Treasury Division of the Bank when Mr. Neal was the Executive Vice-President. Whever I saw him he always had a smile on his face and acknowleged me. I remember to many times he would walk around the office at Christmas and personally wish us the best. It was a pleasure working in the Treasury Divison, My condolences to Mr. Neal's family and friends.
With warmest wishes,
Judi Lloyd

To The Family,
I write this condolence as the last surviving senior partner of Greenshields Incorporated. Our firm and our folks worked with George when he was a key player in Bondland, as well as when he was Executive Vice President of the Bank of Montreal. He was respected and well liked by all of us in the firm and by everyone on Bay Street who knew him.

My sincere condolences to George’s family and friends. It was my honour to have met George while he was attending to the resolution of his father and affairs here in Newfoundland. George’s father William one of the finest gentlemen I have ever met in my life and the apple certainly did not fall from the tree.

George and I arrived from opposite ends of the country starting as bond traders at BMO's Head Office, in the early 1960's. He was a great colleague at the time, and later a wise and sympathetic boss. Those were turbulent times at the Bank under its irascible CEO Bill Mulholland, but George successfully navigated his career. He can be remembered for many
things - investment smarts, physical skills - but above all for his genuine concern and respect for his co-workers, which he in turned earned back from them in spades.

Thinking of you all and sending my condolences. It was a perk in recent years to see George when he was coming back to visit with his father in St. John's and we shared several meals with good conversation. His parents and mine were close friends and there are good memories of George going back many years.
