Obituary of Mrs. Joanne Ramona Dey

Joanne Ramona Dey, age 85, passed away on Sunday morning, August 6, in the company of her loving family.

Daughter of Annie Emrith and Moonilal Secumar, Joanne was born on June 13, 1938, in Victoria Village, Trinidad. She was married to Lennox Anthony “Tony” Dey for 57 years, and she kept him in her heart after his death in November 2015. Joanne was the matriarch of their family of five children, as well as a beloved sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was deeply devoted to her family, who greatly love and miss her.

In 1963, Joanne and Tony were the first wave of Caribbean immigrants to Toronto. Her strength and fierce intelligence served her and her family well, buttressing them to forge ahead. Joanne was an avid reader and writer, who was ahead of her time. She was skilled at sewing, decorating, design and especially cooking— at which she was entirely self-taught. Blessed with an exquisite voice, she had a pure, sweet soprano’s tone that could hit the kind of high notes for which most singers strain.

Joanne is survived by her five children, Lisa Dey (Brian Robertson), Roger Dey (Gayle Butler), Tracey Dey (Margaret DeRosia), Christine Dey (Sam Sills) and Deborah Dey Williams (Otes Williams); her grandchildren, Marlee, Annie, Dennis, Nathan and Jordan; her great-grandchildren, Lauren, Lily, Jordan and Rosie; her brother, Franklin Moonilal, and her sisters, Janet Moonilal and Joy Beeransingh.

Visitation will take place at Ogden Funeral Home at 4164 Sheppard Ave. E., Scarborough, ON, M1S 1T3 on Friday, August 11, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 12, at 2:00 p.m. in the Ogden Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made in the family name to St. Michael’s Hospital.
