My visits to Joanne and Tony’s house were sometimes a little noisy but I was always made very welcome. I was made to feel like a member of the family.
There were often memorable moments; during one visit, I had the pleasure of listening to Joanne sing a song to her husband, Tony; I remember her wonderful singing voice; powerful, on tune and crystal clear.
Despite being very busy cooking and entertaining her other guests, Joanne always found time to show an interest in what I was doing.
Joanne has left behind a wonderful legacy as a talented singer, caring individual, clever thinker, skilled cook, and loving mother. We will cherish the memories we have of her and the positive impact she made on those around her.

My first introduction with Mom Dey was one that left her with a slight fear for her eldest, Lisa. Both Tony and Joanne cautioned her that I resembled someone who had been in the news… and not for a good reason. After calming their fears I became a part of a rich and colourful family although the conversation levels often lead me to try and find a quiet place in the house. She was always accepting though not always fond of my humour. I would on many occasions get the glaring side look and sis from her. I will forever remember the wonderful meals and especially Sunday mornings of Buljol or Kingfish and bake as well as the the entertaining/animated conversations. She lead a full life and has treasure trove of family and friends to remember her by.

Meeting Mrs. Dey for the first time was an unforgettable moment. This lovely personality approached me with such class and kindness in her voice. We instantly became friends. She had a way of making me feel I was special to her and what I had to say was important and needed to be heard.
When she corrected me, it was never to demean me in any way, but to make me a better person.
For the short that I had known her, I considered Mrs. Dey, my second mom.
She will be missed.

My dear Granny will be missed by everyone she met. Her smile and laugh were contagious. Her love spread far and wide throughout her family. If you entered her home she welcomed you with open arms and always made sure to fill your tummy with her delicious food.
She is one of the strongest women I’ve ever met and will ever know. Granny taught us that life isn’t about materialistic things, it’s about love and being creative, embracing your talents and being kind to one another.
I have so many wonderful memories from when I was little and throughout my adulthood with her. Her talents of sewing, singing, cooking and writing live on through me. Sharing her food and warm home every holiday with our family will forever live in my heart. Her strong willed personality is also something that has been passed on to me (and my daughter Lily). I see traits of her in my own children now, and know she will live on through all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She had a long, full life filled with lots of love, joy and hurdles she overcame along the way. I miss her every day, but know she’s at peace now. It was her time to be reunited with my Grandad, her soulmate and best friend.
Rest in peace Granny, I love you more than you’ll ever know.

Mrs. Joanne Ramona Dey, Mrs. Dey, Mama Dey, JoJo. What a strong confident feisty woman. As her only son’s partner, I learned quickly of her fierce devotion to her family and how proud she was of all of her children. She was a lady who commanded respect and I came to admire the way she carried herself and her overall confidence as a woman. We shared similar paths, both having migrated to Canada with young families alone and she and I would share our stories. She told me of her struggles, her travels, her beautiful love affair with her dear husband, stories of her siblings and her children. I learned of her sacrifices and tenacity regarding the management of her household. She would ask me about my journey and always enquired about my own two children. Family was so important to her and how one treated one's family was a measure of character in her eyes. I am so happy that over time, we were able to build a friendship as she recognized how I cared not just for her son but for her whole family. She raised five children who are all capable, creative, and kind adults who love her and each other, a testament to her care. She accomplished much in her lifetime and her spirit will live on in her family. I will miss her dearly. Rest in paradise dear Mama Dey.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on the snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there; I did not die. (original by Harner/Frye)

From the first day her son brought me home she welcomed me with open arms. The love and warmth she showed me led me to see her as a second mom. "Ma" as I affectionately called her, could brighten your day with a smile and her hugs and advice over the years were priceless. I gained an extended family and more unconditional love and support the day I met her. She was always my cheerleader and wanted all the best things in life for me. We had many conversations over the years on many topics and she was particularly engaged when we spoke about books, music or I asked for a recipe. I will miss her, but I will always cherish the memories and the loving feeling and warmth I felt when around her. I am glad I got the opportunity to thank her for the love. May she be reunited with her love and the universe in peace.
