Obituary of Mrs. Ivy Viola Twells
Mrs. Ivy Viola Twells – a devoted homemaker and doting mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother – died on Sunday, August 6 in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. She was 102 years old.
Ivy Viola Dore was born on July 13, 1921 in Basseterre, St. Kitts, to parents Louvina and Henry Dore. Known to most as Viola, she was raised in the capital city and attended Basseterre Girls School.
As a young girl, her mother died suddenly. In her early 20s, she traveled to Curacao to seek employment and she found work as a domestic worker.
She returned to Basseterre and had her first child, Bernice in 1947. She later married her husband Charles in 1958 and they had five children together, a daughter Dorlina and four sons, Lawrence, Dennis, Trevor and Charles Jr. They lived on Manchester Avenue.
Her husband worked as a carpenter and Mrs. Twells raised their children, dutifully caring for them and managing the household. She was fiscally responsible and knew how to stretch a dollar, making sure that no one in their home was hungry but also ensuring that even a small amount of money was always being saved in the bank.
Her husband later opened a small variety store on Wellington Road, known locally as “the shop,” which sold groceries, baked goods and beer. The store in their Basseterre neighbourhood allowed the family to become more financially stable. Mrs. Twells was a savvy businesswoman who helped run the store with her husband, selling goods to customers and managing the inventory.
At home, she was known for running her household on a schedule, cooking healthy foods, baking desserts and breads, and ironing to perfection. Her specialities included making coconut tarts, bread pudding, Conkie and Johnny Cakes. She also loved to eat mangoes and any candies she could get her hands on. When asked to divulge her secret to long life, she would often reply, “I eat anything.”
Known for her endearing laugh, contagious smile and friendly demeanor, she was popular in her community.
Mrs. Twells and her husband immigrated to Toronto, Ontario Canada in 1986. She lived for 37 years at a Lawrence Avenue East home in Scarborough where she quickly made many friends and became known and respected by her neighbours. Mrs. Twells resided in the home with her husband who died in September 2005.
Mrs. Twells leaves behind her daughter Dorlina Thomas (Noel) and sons Lawrence (Angela), Dennis (Dianne Hamilton), Trevor (Merciadine) and Charles Jr. (Sharon Bailey) of Canada.
