Obituary of Mrs. Hannah "Ann" Thompson

Please share a memory of Mrs. Hannah to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Ann Thompson (nee Hannah Attridge) originally from County Cork, Ireland passed away after a short illness on July 31, 2023 in her 97th year.  Ann was predeceased by her loving husband Gerald Thompson from County Derry N. Ireland. She was the beloved mother of Vivien and Maureen. Ann is also predeceased by eleven siblings. She will be lovingly missed by her sister Lizzie in Birmingham England and by her many nieces and nephews originally from Ireland and England. Ann is also predeceased by Gerald’s brother Robert and will be lovingly missed by her nieces and nephews in N. Ireland.

Ann, Gerald and Vivien immigrated to Canada in 1951.  Maureen was born in 1952. They settled in Agincourt for the remaining years. They were joyously welcomed to Canada by two of Gerald’s brothers, Wilson and Jim as well as by Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins in Toronto, Markham, Warkworth, Campbellford and those in the United States.  Ann and Gerald in turn were instrumental in welcoming more of the their relatives to Toronto in the following years.

Ann was known as a fun loving, mischievous, caring and generous person who loved company and an Irish craic.  She filled her days with a love and joy of ongoing family life, extended family life, neighbourhood life and cottage life.  Ann had a passion for gardening, sewing, knitting and various other crafts. She also enjoyed her employment in various employment positions as well as operating a business of her own.

Mom was struck with vascular dementia in 2008.  She remained in her home with Maureen and the additional caregiving support of Vivien and four wonderful private caregivers Mercylin, Delmi, Inez and Haja.  Ann also greatly appreciated Tony for his hard work over these past years in maintaining her beautiful garden.

In February 2020 Ann was placed in long term care.  She was loved, enjoyed and cared for by staff and residents at The Wexford along with continued support from her private caregivers.  Ann remained true to her personality in many ways despite dementia.  She knew her daughters and others dear to her until her passing.  Ann suffered a brief lung illness that was too difficult a challenge to overcome.

At a later date Ann and Gerald’s ashes will be scattered at the Rose Garden at Duffin Meadows Cemetery in Pickering Ontario. Their names will be engraved on the face of a beautiful Ontario rock that faces south and west for the best sun and warmth.
