Mr. Stanley Algoo

Obituary of Mr. Stanley Algoo

Please share a memory of Mr. Stanley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Our dear beloved Stanley suddenly passed away at home on Friday, July 28th 2023. Stanley was born in Guyana on January 27th, 1942 to Edward and Doris Algoo (both deceased).  He was the husband of Imogen (nee Foster), father of Brendon,(his only child) son-in-law of Richard and Beulah Foster (both deceased).  He will be missed by his siblings Stella, Carol, Lynette (deceased), Catherine, Lennox and Judy.

He was the nephew of Rambharose, Rajkumar (Palloo), Thankur, Thombie, David and Hannah Algoo (deceased), and other extended family members in Canada and the U.S.A.

Stanley attended the Vistabella CM School in Trinidad, established by the Canadian Missionaries.  He proceeded to Naparima College where he obtained an Island Scholarship in 1961.  He proceeded to McGill University where he obtained a B.A., followed by a B.L.S. from the University of British Columbia and finally his M.L.S. from the University of Toronto in 1971.

Stanley emigrated to Toronto in 1971, after serving as Head of Carnegie Free Library in San Fernando and Acting Head of the Central Library of Trinidad and Tobago.

In Toronto he retired as Director of Technical and Computer Services for the Scarborough Public Library after he introduced the first bibliographic computer system and developed the Chinese script catalog, making his library system the first in North America to use the unique Chinese stroke count filing system.

Stanley was a deeply spiritual person and collected and donated numerous documents to the Presbyterian Archives.  He was a skilled fundraiser for the Naparima Alumni Association of Canada.  His philanthropic nature, his skill as an editor, and advocacy, are all evident in the measures which he took, to assist these authors with their publications.

Rest in Peace Stanley.  A lifetime of memories are ours to cherish by generations gone, and to come.

You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten, and we love you.
