CYRIL GRANVILLE HALLAM HOPKINSON BRYAN III

APRIL 28 1940-JULY 27 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we inform the world that Cyril (Cy) has left us after a lengthy battle. Born the 2nd child and first son to the late Cyril George Hopkinson Bryan II and the late Muriel McDougall. Cyril leaves behind his spouse Carol, daughter Shannon and son Gavin, Grandson Grayson, Godson Cyril his sisters Joan, Elise, Maureen, Andrea, Kim, Shelly, Melanie and Elaine (deceased) brothers Kevin, Colin (deceased) and John (deceased).

Cy first job was at Queens College in Guyana and immigrated to Canada in 1966 with BIG DREAMS. He attended York University obtaining an honours degree in Economics in 1970. Cy was a futurist, his thesis was on 'Changing China-The Rise of the Next World Superpower', and 50+ years later he was bang on target. In the late 1960's Cy was already programming computers and by the 1970's predicting the creation of the Internet.

In 1980, Cy observed the increasing trend of outsourced computer services, and along with his wife, Carol, started Cycom from his living room. The company provided computer technology support and consulting services to businesses across Canada. Over a 12 year period, Cycom grew to 2 locations in the Toronto area before being sold and is still in operation today. Cy believed in empowering young people to follow his path of dreaming big and mentored several entrepreneurs during his time running Cycom.

In his youth in Buxton, Guyana, Cyril became a pupil teacher at 14 years old, and over the years, he has always maintained a connection with the village and has participated in many activities to raise the visibility of the village in Toronto. In 2021, Cy was one of the special awardees recognized for his online international news services from the Friends of Villages Museum and Archives Inc. in the U.S. The event was sponsored by the Buxton/Friendship Museum --Archives and Culture Center.

Later in life, his love for his home country Guyana became the focus with the creation of his popular Guyanese Online Blog (guyaneseonline.net) that informed and connected thousands of Guyana's diasporas around the globe to news and global topics. In 2016 he was selected by the Guyana Cultural Association of New York to receive a citation from the Borough of Brooklyn, New York, in recognition of his trail blazing online activity connecting the Guyanese Diaspora via his popular blog.

Cy and Carol met on Centre Island at the first Caribana held in 1967 and were married 3 years later leading up to the Caribana weekend. Everyone knows Cy always loved a good party (fete), and we welcome you to join us at NODO for a proper sendoff party in his honour on Sunday August 6th (Noon-4pm).
