Bernard Hilton Yong-Set

(1947-2023)

Bernard Hilton Yong-Set (楊時新) passed away at his home in Scarborough, Ontario in the afternoon on April 25th, 2023 after a long, hard battle with an incurable disease.

Born in Georgetown, Guyana, in 1947, he would always tell tales of running around at the laundry and eating all of the best foods. He immigrated to Canada in 1966 where he studied at McGill University, before starting a small giftware store in Port Union, Ontario. His passions for fishing and invention resulted in the founding of Stringease Tackle Manufacturing Company Ltd., several patented ideas, and countless fisherman across the world happy not to have let the big one get away thanks to his inventions. When not out fishing (which he often was), he loved his family, his Guyanese food, and occasionally playing guitar, a love that he passed on to his sons.

Predeceased by his parents YOUNG Liang Set and Ileen FUNG, he is survived by his caring wife of 47 years, Vilma SUE, his brother Wrenrick (Marcia), sisters Patricia (Desmond) and Marlene, and his sons Christopher and Michael.

He will be missed by his nieces and nephews, Kari-Ann (Val), Rodney (Belinda), Kimberly (Michael), Lisa (Anthony), Steven (May), and Katherine (Gregory), as well as his many friends, neighbours, business associates, and everyone who got to meet this self-proclaimed “short man with big ideas”.

If you so choose and if you are able, donations can be made to Parkinson Canada (parkinson.ca), the University Health Network Foundation (uhnfoundation.ca), or to any charity of your choosing benefitting wildlife conservation in your area.

Funeral and visitation details can be found at ogdenfuneralhome.com.

He was caught by this world for a brief period of time and now he’s been released.

May the fish always be biting.
