You were so brave facing your illness. You liked celebrating your birthday and Christmas even during Covid and your failing health. So Happy we all got together to celebrate your 75th Birthday and you endured the drive to Brampton yet another time ( previous visit was to meet our new Grand nieces -Hazel and Ruby)

Vilma, I am very sorry to hear. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. I have lots of fond memories of Bernard when we would gather at the sports shows thru the years. I always respected the way he ran his business and treated everyone so well. He was truly someone I considered a friend. I know the past few years have been tough on the both of you and hope you can find comfort and peace. I will definitely take some time to remember him the next time I am out on the water.

[This is a documentation of the tribute given at the visitation on May 2, 2023, filled in with the original details that were omitted or forgotten live, and also modified for print.]
At Ayah’s funeral, I talked about the idea that you couldn’t live without dying, but you could die without living. There are, however, two other possibilities—arguably two sides of the same coin; it is possible to be alive without living and to die without dying. Unfortunately, for Dad, that was his case. He loved fishing, food, and talking (often about those first two things). By the end, he couldn’t do any of those things...
Dad did love his food... Thinking about it, talking it about it, and eating it. And all the good stuff too, by which I mean, all the bad stuff! Pepper sauce so hot, it’d burn through the plate! He always needed “something sweet” after every meal, including dessert. A couple of other food-related memories: he loved sharing his love of food with others, especially food from back in Guyana. While he still could, he tried many times to find the proper cassava pone recipe; all different kinds of cassava and coconut, different ratios, and different liquids before we finally settled on a 3:1 ratio of frozen grated cassava to frozen grated coconut with about 1 can of evaporated milk, raisins, and spices... then we’d slice it up, pack it up and give it away to everyone in arm’s reach (after reserving some for us, of course).
He wanted “conkee” one day. When he described it to me, it sounded like a cornbread, but with pumpkin. He told me just to bake it in the oven... He said it didn’t come out right. The next attempt, he told me to wrap in it aluminum foil and steam it—still not quite right, maybe not surprisingly. I bought some frozen banana leaves to try to do it properly, but we never got to try them.
In his last months, he finally got his wish of trying to do curried hassa. There I was in the kitchen, never had cleaned a fish in my life, cleaning these two small hassa—shoutout to Uncle Des for getting them—following some 10-step cleaning process from YouTube, then frying and currying them... He couldn’t eat it “the way you’re supposed to”, but I think he still enjoyed it. I hope he did.
And what can be said about the fishing that he didn’t already tell you about... He was a big deal in the fishing tackle industry, much bigger, perhaps, than I ever realised. When we posted the announcement to Facebook—an announcement that has now been shared with over 15K people at time of writing—the biggest themes of the comments were, “Oh man, he was so great to be around and talk with at the fishing shows each year!”, “It was always the best part of the show seeing what he’d come up with this time!”. Someone even commented that he’d changed the way that we fish.
What I’ll always remember and be thankful for, though, is that Dad played guitar and taught me how to play. Well, at least those first four chords, then, I was kinda on my own... And he didn’t get mad that one time when I tried to help tune his guitar, not realizing that all of the strings were supposed to sound different.
At Amah or Ayah’s funeral, I remember the reverend(?) saying some very nice words, but he also said that he was neither a country music fan nor a big fan of Carrie Underwood. Being a country music fan and a fan of Carrie, I didn’t like that part so much, but his idea was good, so I’m borrowing it. Instead of quoting a few of the lyrics, though, I’ll try to play the song for you.
[Current events side tributes to Harry Belafonte (who passed away several hours before Dad on April 25) and Gordon Lightfoot (who passed away the previous evening, May 1—I actually received the news via Dad’s iPhone.)]
I should also pass along the story of [the guitar that I’m playing] or at least the version of the story that I remember Dad telling about it. He got it after coming to Canada, so sometime in either ’66 or ’67. This wasn’t the first guitar he got, though. The first one that he got from Long & McQuade in Montreal was a Yamaha. Not knowing much about Canadian winters yet or perhaps not knowing much about guitar maintenance, he walked the guitar home, fully tuned, in its case, through the streets of Montreal, in the middle of winter. Upon arriving home, I would think in a matter of hours if not minutes, the string tension and thermal shock snapped the neck of the guitar... I guess things worked differently in the 60’s because he simply took the broken guitar back and they gave him this one: a Gibson J-50 that, from what I understand, in today’s money at least, is worth considerably more than the Yamaha would ever likely have been. So Dad’s luck was good sometimes...
[Carrie Underwood’s song “Temporary Home”—look it up if you don’t know it.]
Thanks, Dad.

Q: What will you never forget about Mr. Bernard Hilton?
A: A few memories of Bernard (See Sin); while we lived for awhile at his parents house on 55 Kimberdale Crescent. He had a 240Z Red car for his work; every weekend this had to be washed & polished, and ready for work on Mondays, very diligent & detailed.
He was a very good cook, back in the early days of the 70’s; remembering him cooking for us many Stews; his favourite was Green Beans & Ground Beef with crushed tomatoes, delicious.
Every Saturday night it was hockey night in the family room, we would sit together and enjoy the games each week. When a goal was scored, he would loudly repeat & raise his hands saying….. He scored.., also would say to the players, shoot the puck, shoot now; what’s he waiting for, then you would hear him say, awh….shucks.
His quiet time, you would see him, sitting on the Porch playing his guitar, sometimes a song by Gordon Lightfoot or Sylvia Tyson (believe this is correct) May God receive you at the Gates of Heaven, and be blessed eternally.
- Desmond (Brother-in-Law)

Eulogy given May 3, 2023, St. Timothy’s, Agincourt:
My dear brother, See. Today we mourn but we can still smile. Our tomorrows will be filled with memories. Memories of your zest for life, your creativity, inventiveness, adventurism, entrepreneurship, and your enduring enthusiasm for all things to do with fishing. But more than this, your struggle over the years with your terrible illness. How you faced these challenges with an active mind as your body was failing, shows such strength. It gives us strength. How you managed only you and your God knew.
At last your struggle is over. You are at peace, in God’s hands. We will miss you, will always remember, and give thanks.

We have many fond memories of Bernard. He loved fishing and we enjoyed many times in Venice. Florida fishing with him, Wrenrick, Marcia and Vilma. We also went Intracoastal fishing.
Late one night Bernard, Harry and Wrenrick went fishing. They were the only ones who caught any fishes. A few times we went to Bernard's home in Scarborough to collect fishes he had caught. Bernard will be sadly missed by all those whose lives he had touched.
Rest in Heavenly Peace Bernard

Vilma, Christopher & Michael,
We are so sorry to hear of See's passing, our condolences to you all.
We recall See arriving in London and not feeling well. We decided to take him to the hospital, by which time See was more or less his usual self, chatting away. Upon seeing the doctor, See had great pleasure in telling him we were his cousins, his days exploring and about.Yet studying at Leeds. The doctor, a younger man than See perhaps, listened and responded. See was given the all clear. At home, he insisted on calling you. 'See,' I said, 'please don't worry Vilma!' but See being See had to call to inform you about his days experience!
Then there was the time he took us fishing at an unearthly hour. I believe we let more escape than we actually caught! Nevertheless the ones (or one!) that made it back home with us were cured and smoked and we had much pleasure enjoying a few days later.
We thank you See for the fond memories shared. Rest in Peace, See.

Dear Vilma, Christopher & Michael, we send you our deepest sympathy at this very sad time. Vilma, you are truly blessed for all the love and care you gave to Bernie in his time of need.
We have happy memories of Bernie, first as the guy with the red sports car who swept our beautiful cousin off her feet. A young man who knew exactly what he wanted and went after it. He loved inventing and devoted his time to creating products related to fishing--one of his greatest loves second only to Vilma and his sons. Bernard possessed the gift of the gab and he used to stop by RP Graphics to bring us a print job or two and sometimes a tin full of the world's best chinese cakes baked by Vilma. Bernie would stay a couple of hours filling us in on the family news and of course his next planned invention or his exciting trips to China. Bernie lived his life doing all the things he loved and left behind a beautiful legacy in his two sons and a life well lived. Happy Fishing Bernie.
Love and prayers, George, Pamela, Natalie & Mike.
