Obituary of Ms. Joan Louise Hayes

Please share a memory of Ms. Joan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Joan Louise Hayes (Mason) went to her heavenly home on December 25, 2022 and is now with her son Geoffrey and many dearly departed friends and family. Her family, son Jason and daughter-in-law Kerri, grandchildren Aidan, Nathan and Ellen, niece Susan (George), and brother Gordon, along with many close friends and neighbours, will mourn her passing. However, we celebrate knowing that she is with the Lord and is at peace.

Joan was born and raised in Agincourt in a farmhouse built by her father, Bruce Mason, at the corner of Victoria Park and Sheppard Avenues, which was then the countryside. She would often reminisce about visiting her uncle’s farm to see the horses, and her lifelong love of animals meant that she always had a dog (or two) as pets.

Joan was passionate about teaching and caring for children. She was trained as a teacher and taught primary school grades before retiring from the classroom when she had her children. She later went back to teaching as a private tutor for children with special needs and learning disabilities, followed by many years as a preschool teacher at Don Valley Christian Childcare. She was also the Children's Director and Teacher at Scarborough Community Bible Study (CBS) Class for five years.

Joan was an active member of her church community.  She attended Bendale Bible Chapel in Scarborough for many years and then People’s Church for the past decade. She was involved in women’s ministries and with newcomers to Canada. Joan developed lasting friendships that were a blessing and support to her, especially during difficult times in her life.

A private burial service for immediate family will take place at Erskine Cemetery. A memorial service to celebrate Joan’s life will be held on February 4th 2023 at 11 am at Bendale Bible Chapel (330 Bellamy Rd N, Scarborough, ON M1H 1E8) followed by a reception. The service will be live streamed for those who wish to attend online.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Joan’s memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada or the Toronto Humane Society.

A tribute to Joan written by a close friend:

A gentle soul who loved her animals
An artistic  person who created a comfy, welcoming home
A Strong woman who lost a young son yet kept going
A kind person who was always caring about others
A great sense of humour
A strong faith
Proud of her son and his family
True to her family and friends
And so much more
I will miss her phone calls and cards.

Rest In Peace dear friend.
You are missed.
