Obituary of Mrs. Marion Elaine Hunter
Marion Elaine (Mann) Hunter
July 27, 1936 – December 13, 2022
After a very interesting life, Marion passed away on December 13, 2022 at the age of 86. She was challenged by Multiple Myeloma cancer for 22 years and bore it like a rock. Marion is survived by her husband of over 64 wonderful years Donald, son Gord (Beth), daughter Barb Cridland (Jeff) and 3 grandchildren, Alex (Eline Vring) and Heather Cridland (Grég Desroches), and Shanna Hunter; sister Carolyn Dunlop (John deceased) and brother Doug Mann, sister-in-law Beryl Hunter, brother-in-law Rev. Neil Hunter (Bonnie), sister-in-law Lynn Morrison (Gerald), along with many wonderful nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Family times were always great times to celebrate for Marion.
Prior to starting her family, Marion taught at Ritson Rd. Public School in Oshawa for three years, followed by one year at William Burgess Public School in East York. She returned to the school community in 1980 as an Educational Assistant in a developmental program at Nelson A. Boylen Secondary School in North York. All her life she enjoyed music, taking Royal Conservatory exams in piano to Grade 9, singing in, and accompanying choirs and dance classes, U.C.W. soloists and Couples Club sing songs. She loved to sing and listen to the old traditional and gospel hymns.
Marion had a lifelong involvement in the Girl Guides of Canada and was awarded for 60 years service to the organization, holding many posts and chairing many committees. She was a member of the United Church of Canada and attended over the years at Northminster in Oshawa, Victoria Village and Jubilee United Churches in Toronto. She taught Sunday School, attending young peoples’ groups and chairing committees.
Marion enjoyed sports, belonging to tennis and badminton clubs in earlier years and was an active curler until her cancer diagnosis. An avid Toronto Blue Jays fan, she cheered on the team from its inception in 1977. Marion also loved to travel. She and Don went on numerous cruises as well multiple visits to Britain and various parts of Canada.
Her family was very important to her. She enjoyed entertaining and attending family reunions. Studying her genealogy was meaningful and she kept many records of her ancestors. She made photographic greeting cards; many that were sent out as Pastoral Care Cards to people in the church. For many years she attended the Myeloma Support Group meetings helping other patients with information on the disease, for which there currently is no cure, and the many side effects of treatment.
Marion’s family wishes to thank Dr. Rena Buckstein and her team at the Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre for their many years caring for Marion as well as the team at the Sunnybrook Palliative Care Unit for their compassionate care during her last few weeks of life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sunnybrook Hospital Foundation, the Girl Guides of Canada, or a charity of your choice.
