I was at the funeral and I wished I had time to visit with his family before i had to leave. So I'll share some thoughts here.
I taught Matthew two times in journalism school, both times were memorable. In first year, I remember where he sat, just right of me at the lectern, because he was so engaged, debating and discussing subjects with an active group of peers who would become friends in the program.
A couple of years later I taught him when he was in his third year, fall term. He was in a class of students particularly keen on learning, picking up journalism and writing skills and applying them immediately to work. The goal of this class was to publish higher-level reporting every week, and also to produce broadcasts for the campus radio station. In this context of high achievers, Matthew shone for how intently he listened, how focused he was, how quickly he worked to take on suggestions, and how he applied himself without any kind of hesitation. There was nobody more committed than him.
I'll always remember Matthew. I am not a religious person, but there was something saintly and pure about him as a student. I hope my thoughts somehow give parents and family comfort. My deepest condolences.

Matthew was a kind and conscientious student. He asked clarifying questions on behalf of himself and his classmates and was often observed helping anyone who needed it. When I asked for three sources in a journalism assignment, he gave me five. His passion for sports journalism shone through from the start of our limited time together. I’m so sorry for this loss.

Matthew was one of the first people I met at the Ryerson School of Journalism in the fall of 2016. Everyone in our program knew him to be a fantastic guy with a keen ear for a story and it was amazing to see him progress as a journalist. Watching him succeed in broadcast journalism came as no shock to us classmates and it was always a pleasure to see him pop up on my social media with another piece he created. The Canadian journalism landscape lost a good one; sending his family and loved ones my deepest condolences.

When I first met Matthew in the journalism podcasting course I was teaching, he was laidback and so very humble. Soon, as he turned in his stories, I saw sparks: such passion for sports, such a thirst for feedback and a determination to work hard and smart. More importantly, Matthew was so, so nice. And genuine. I’m so honoured to have know Matthew and like everyone who knew him, so, so sad he has left us. For Matthew’s family, I can’t imagine the grief in your hearts.

Matthew was one of the best young journalists I had the good fortune of knowing and working with. He was curious and hard-working and endlessly kind. He'll be sorely missed. My thoughts are with his family. -Jane G
