Hi Margaret and members of the Jamieson clan.
I want to share with you a story that I have mentioned to a few of you, which I think you might all find of interest…
About ten years ago, I was at a charity golf tournament. I met a former work colleague, Ed, at this tournament. At some point during the day, between shots as we were golfing together, we were discussing recent holidays. Ed mentioned he and his family had rented a cottage in Muskoka. I asked where, to which Ed replied near a small town I likely hadn’t heard of. I smiled, as I replied that I was familiar with Muskoka having spent many summers there. During the ensuing dialogue, we quickly realized that Ed and his family had rented the Jamieson’s back cottage; I explained to Ed that I had pretty much grown up in the company of the Jamieson’s - I knew the cottage and property quite well. I asked Ed how his vacation was. His reply was that he and his family quite enjoyed their stay, adding that John Jamieson had been particularly attentive, clearly endeavouring to ensure they had a great vacation experience; Ed then proceeded to tell me about something that happened during their stay, which illustrated John’s authentic interest in making this happen. One of the days Ed and his family decided to venture into Bala - my recollection is that Ed told me that John encouraged them to do this, explaining that they might find it fun to spend a few hours exploring the town. Ed and his family left for town and along the way realized they had a flat tire very near to Bala. As Ed was beginning to unpack things to get at the spare tire, John happened upon them on his own drive to town. John stopped to intervene, insisting that Ed should be enjoying the vacation time with his family - he would take care of replacing the flat with the spare. While Ed attempted to decline this offer, John cheerfully insisted that Ed and his family should walk into town; it would be a short walk on a beautiful sunny day, and it would be fun for them to enjoy an ice cream or some other treat together. John added that he would have the tire changed for them in no time. It was impossible for Ed to reject John’s generous offer for assistance; he graciously accepted and set out for the walk to Bala with his family. True to his word, John had the spare on and the tools and flat re-packed into the car in no time - perhaps John called Ed on his mobile to let him know this - my memory on this point is a bit fuzzy. In any event, the car was ready when Ed and his family returned to continue their drive - the flat was but a minor inconvenience, given John’s assistance. John’s generosity created a very memorable and positive experience for Ed and his family.
On a more personal level, I want to add that I always enjoyed my conversations with John. Whether we were discussing our respective Engineering education experiences, challenging calculus problems or the achievements of each of you, John’s manner was always engaging. His focus was solely on our conversation - no distractions - asking questions, listening attentively to my replies, answering my questions with his own thoughtful replies. During our conversations, John frequently mentioned each of you by name, clearly expressing his love for you all, and his happiness with your successes, which he quite openly mentioned were beyond his own. And, Margaret, he always mentioned his joy and happiness with the time he was able to spend with you, the love of his life!
With fond memories of the role that John played in so many lives, including mine, Rich Deakin.

John has always been a great friend to Dad (George). When any of the kids were moving John offered to assist with his trailer. When there were questions about the electrical in one of their houses John was there testing the circuits. When one of the grandkids wasn't understanding math, John sat down with them for an hour after dinner and found a way to make them understand it. Trigonometric identities didn't stand a chance. The first day of Dad's retirement, John showed up at the door and said "Can George come out to play?" Over the years they had many adventures, Blue Jay games, travels and helped each other with home renovation projects. When Mom (Georgie) died, John made sure to call and check in with Dad daily. Everyone needs a best friend like that. John will be missed.

Dear Marg, I was sad to hear the passing of John. You and John and my Mom and Dad have been friends I’m sure for a minimum of 50 years ! I have many memories of my childhood of our family vacations to Florida. All of us kids having lots of fun at the beach , mini golfing and lots of laughs. I especially remember David, dancing around the hotel room, beach towel wrapped around his waist and doing the hula dance ! Hence the nickname we gave him, Davido ! Many visits to your beautiful cottage in Muskoka . I remember John making sure we had swimming buddies before we could go into the lake, and every so often him yelling out a roll call to make sure we were all safe. In the years to come you and John opened your cottage to my children as well, creating memories for them. Over the years my parents have kept me up to date with the accolades of your family. Please express my condolences to Jim, David and Nancy and their families. With love, Linda Kiiskinen

Dear Marg and family,
We are saddened to hear of John's passing,
John was very engaging and always had a word or 3 to offer on so many subjects as he was well schooled.
He was a great neighbour and friend of our father, Ross Ashforth, and we appreciated John's attentiveness.
He and Marg would entertain dad at their cottage and visit him in Gravenhurst.
The bay will not be the same without him.

My fondest memory of John was when he was taping his lovely wife Margaret and his granddaughter singing hymns in the special music segment of our church services. Both Margaret and Amanda have beautiful voices and John's pride in them radiated throughout the church. I will miss him.

Dear Jim, Lynne, Christy and Kayli.
We are very sorry to hear of John’s passing. As neighbours and friends of the Jamieson family for decades “up north”, we are keenly aware of John and Marg’s love of Muskoka. John and Marg were always close to and very supportive of our father, Ross Ashforth, especially during Dad’s final years. We will always be grateful for their support and will remember John with fondness.

Dear Jim and Lynne,
I was so sorry to hear about your father’s passing. I know this is a very sad and difficult time for you and your family. You have my very deepest sympathy. I remember John coming to the house years ago to fix my washing machine. He spent the afternoon fixing the machine and talking to Carlo about teaching mathematics. He was a lovely man.
