Hi Matthew,
Very sad news about your Mom. On the positive, she is now at peace and rest, especially in the past 4 years that she was able to be with you so intimately. I'm sure that was the happiest moments of her life.
I have fond memories of your Mom, especially in her earlier years with your Dad.
Filling in a bit of the blanks of those years, I met your Mom for the 1st time when your Dad introduced her to the 1st of the onslaught of family....the Ivan Akais.
It was at that time in Montreal she and your Dad(dating at the time) drove me and our family friend, Paul Wu (Didi) who was visiting from England, to Ottawa to visit some of his relatives there.
We had a wonderful day in Ottawa. Your Mom was very quiet, as is her nature, but enjoying the day.
We, the Ivan Akais and Uncle Alex were also there for their wedding day. They began their life together living on what was then
considered the desired place to live, Nun's Island.
In more recent meetings with your Mom, I experienced that 'sweet mischievous smile' and her love of dancing. We had that in common.
Throughout the years, though I have lived mostly away from the major core of our family, Nellie and I have always had a special connection that came to the fore whenever we saw each other.
Nellie will be fondly remembered, Matthew. She was very resilient, worked hard and deserved all the happiness she received, especially those last 4 years you talk about. I'm sure that was the highlight of her life-----You.
You hold onto that and remember she will always be with you.
Remember that you have cousins that also love you and will give you any support you need.
Love and Peace,
Barbara, Lennox, Lana

I wish I’d known her more before Alzheimer’s. Known more about her life, her family, and her earlier years with my father Frank.
She told me that she was remarrying for companionship. I’m sure that was true but I always felt it was because she didn’t want me to worry about her.
I’ve been mad at the universe for a very long time on her life turned.
But I have comfort knowing that everyday for the last 4 years, she saw my face, heard my voice, and felt my touch. It was a very emotional and intimate time for me and I’ll cherish those moments with her forever.
Now about my dear mom. Hmm... where do I start...
She hated drinking, but loved Baileys.
She spoiled me, but taught the difference between need and want.
She would never tell you she needed help, but was the first person to offer hers.
She loved my father loyally and deeply their entire lives.
She loved knitting, especially for her nieces and nephews.
She would stare out the window and wave until you drove out of sight.
She raised a strong son, who used that strength when she needed it the most.
She loved walking, getting in those 10,000 steps a day.
She never knew how beautiful she was, but always dressed to impress.
She loved doing word searches and would never be caught without one in her hand.
She loved dancing, and had a sweet mischievous smile.
She had the softest hands, and always reached for yours.
She was so strong, brave and graceful.
She was my Mother, and a Mother to many others, not just me.
She was a light, who loved, and shared everything she had.
That is her legacy, and I’m so proud to remember her in all these ways.
A piece of me is gone with her today, but so much of her lives inside of me.
Forever and ever she will only be “right there in my little finger”.
I love you my Momma!

Matt, I can imagine the strength it took to write this beautiful tribute to your Mom. I don't know that I've ever been so moved by words. I am sure that your Mom was aware and comforted by all that you did to care for her. You were as selfless as she was when she took care of your Dad in his long illness. I hope you will always take comfort in what you did.

Auntie Nellie, you were a valuable part of the nursing profession, I think dad still has some of those blue paper "sterile" equipment wraps that you brought home from the OR, waste not want not:) I still have all the great sweaters and scarves you knitted for me, and I especially cherish the beautiful shawl you made for my wedding day. It will be come a family heirloom when it gets passed onto my daughter someday. Your generosity in terms of your time and caring for others is what made you special. Rest in peace.
Love,
Felita
