Obituary of Mr. Victor Joseph Deguara

Please share a memory of Mr. Victor to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

We are extremely saddened at the passing of Victor Joseph Deguara on Sunday, June 13, 2021 at Michael Garron Hospital, East York, Toronto, at the age of 89.

Vic, as most knew him, left his beloved wife of 67 years, Shirley Ann Deguara (nee Waters), and four adored children, Glenn Victor Deguara (Monika), Lori-Ann Gibson (Glenn), Tracey Greer, and Dawna LeBlanc (Robert), who he was always so proud of and told them often.

Vic adored his first love and devoted wife, Shirley. He lived to see her happy and safe and, at that, he more than succeeded.

Vic cherished his moments with his kids—fishing, haircuts, trips to Myrtle Beach and Florida, trying new food, devouring their baking, solving their problems, always asking about their lives. He was their protector, advisor, hero, and always a cheerleader, forever there to pick them up, endlessly loving them back.

Vic loved his eight grandchildren to bits: Stephanie and Danielle, Sabre, Austen, and Deven, Taylor and Connor, and Rylie—he was called “Poppy” and was adored by all of them. They shared the love of trips and trucks, sushi and stories, cars and cantaloupes.  At the drop of a hat, Vic traveled the world to watch each of their endeavours.

Vic touched the lives of many nephews and nieces and other relatives, as well as numerous friends and neighbours, too many to list here. They will all miss his friendly banter and generous spirit.

Vic was stylish and jovial, characteristics which bode well in his career when he travelled extensively as National Sales Manager at Gestetner (Office Equipment), affording him the opportunity to meet a Prince (Philip), a Pope (Paul), and a President (Kennedy).  Vic could—and would—talk to anyone: he would turn a stranger into a long-lost friend within minutes.  His first calling was with the OPP in northern Ontario.  He was also a long time Rotary Member.

Vic spent his youth growing up in The Junction, with his parents, Joseph and Rose, who immigrated from Malta, and his siblings, Chuck (predeceased April 7, 2021) and Angie, and where he met his bride, Shirley.

Vic took great pride in his house and cottage. He loved to putter outside around his garden and loved seeing the animals who would join him there in the morning, his favourite time.

We will miss his smile and laugh from under that baseball cap and sunglasses but he will always be in our hearts.

Messages of condolence can be left at Ogden Funeral Home at www.ogdenfuneralhome.com. Due to COVID restrictions and family wishes, there will be no memorial at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations if wished can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
