Obituary of Mr. Barry Scott

Please share a memory of Mr. Barry to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Barry Scott at the age of 75.  Barry passed peacefully, surrounded by all six of his children on February 14, when he reunited with the love of his life, his wife Bernice.

Barry was father to Sean (Ami), Kristen (Gerry), Adam, Devin, Meaghan (Abi) and Hannah (Fayez). He adored his five grandchildren - Kyle, Alisa, Maya, Claire and Lillian, who referred to him as “Pa.”

Barry is the eldest child of Robert and Joan Scott, brother to Peter (Petra), Suzanne (Bob) and Doug (Rita). Uncle to Dallas, Kira, Scott, Richard, Tamara, Brandon and Sarah. He will also be deeply missed by Bernice’s family, the Ashby’s.

Barry was a fiercely loyal man, he spent 40+ years working as a computer programmer at the Independent Order of Foresters. He and Bernice were foster parents with the Children’s Aid Society, for over 20 years, where they cared for over 200 children in that time.

He spent his years devoted to his family – driving the kids to school, hockey, or across the city to pick up a library book they needed; managing his son’s hockey team; family dinners of takeout Swiss Chalet or Fish and chips; yearly trips to Myrtle Beach or Florida; weekend outings to the St. Jacobs farmers market; pulling the kids out of school to take them to McDonalds for lunch; camping at Emily provincial park; huge family holiday dinners; and seasons passes to Canada’s Wonderland. On weekends, he and Bernice would often host friends and families for drinks and card games, while the kids would play or watch movies.

In 2000, Barry suffered a life altering stroke. He was a determined (some might say “stubborn”) man, so his determination pushed him to get better. Despite his best efforts, he was never able to regain all of the mobility and strength he lost, and his health was never what if was before. In spite of all of this, he stilled managed to walk his eldest daughter down the aisle and dance with her on her wedding day.

Barry was a faithful member of the Grace Church, Scarborough where he served for many years.

Barry wishes were to be cremated, and his ashes joined with Bernice’s where they will be released together as they always wished. Due to the current situation, no funeral service will be observed at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date with close family and friends. In the meantime, I invite everyone to raise a glass to celebrate and remember our father.

I’m Free

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free,
I'm following the path God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard his call,
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work, to play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I've found that peace at the close of the day.

If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My Life's been full, I savoured much,
Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch,

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now, He set me free.
