Eulogy:
Hello, my name is Lauren Rebelo and I am one of 6 grandchildren.
The Rebelo Family would like to welcome everyone who is joining us via live-stream, including my sister Jenna & her family who live in Sault Ste. Marie and my cousin Sarah, who is living in Japan. We thank-you all for your love and support.
The following Eulogy has been written by my Dad, my Tia Gina and my Uncle Bob:
Our mother was a feisty woman, who, like many of us, resisted change. Our dad often told us she fought just to come to Canada back in 1964! It takes a strong woman to leave her homeland, get on a plane with two very young children, just 1 and 2 years old and land in a country with a very different climate and a completely different language. Our Mother, like many from that era not only managed to adapt but she thrived!
It didn’t take long for our parents to buy their very first home, a cute little bungalow @ Queen & Jones, in the east end of Toronto. Mom was very proud that she finally had a place to call her own. It was just the 4 of us at that time. Dad was working for TTC and mom @ St. Michael’s Hospital and we were never left with a baby-sitter. Our parents would work different shifts and we would often board the streetcar with our mom, get off @ the corner of Yonge & Queen and wait for our dad to magically appear. It was seamless; mom handed us over, go start her shift at the hospital and we would get back on the streetcar and make the trek home with dad. It was the perfect system and they managed it all without cell phones!
In 1972, we moved to a brand new house in Willowdale. Once again, mom resisted. She cried and she fought hard! Back in the early 1970s, Willowdale was considered far; we were in a brand new subdivision, TTC only went so far and dad didn’t drive. Three years later our brother “Bobby” came along - Regina took it hard as she had been the baby of the family for so many years but she eventually grew to love him.
Mom and dad built a good life for themselves and for us. Dad continued to work for TTC, mom worked @ Providence Villa and we all helped raise Bobby. An opportunity came up for mom to work @ the brand new Eaton’s store, in a newly-built Scarborough Town Centre, as a Baker in their restaurant. As much as she loved her previous jobs and the friends she had made along the way, there were many perks with her working @ Eaton’s. Not only did she bring home deliciously baked goods (she was famous for her lemon tarts), she loved the employee discounts AND discovered a shopping mall! She loved her independence and the freedom to shop. She would tell my dad to just pick her up an hour or so after work was done. Shopping brought her so much joy and we would often pick her up with 4-5 bags in each hand! Whether it was Christmas, someone’s birthday or for no reason at all, many of us would get treated with little treasures just because they were “so cute”!
Mom and dad were fortunate enough to retire early. They became very involved with their Parish, kept up with their Portuguese traditions, continued to make more friends and built a second family. Both sang in the Choir; mom LOVED to sing, dad not so much but what they did, they always did it together. They travelled and whether it was with their family or with friends, they left their mark and made it fun and memorable. In addition to visiting family in the Azores and Fall River, they visited Main Land Portugal, Madeira, Spain, France, Florida, the Caribbean, Curaçao, St. Lucia, the East Coast and Quebec. For someone who didn’t want to leave her homeland, that’s a lot of travelling!
Mom was a kind soul with a heart of gold. She was determined, independent and always put others before her, especially the love of her life. She adored our dad; you wouldn’t always know it with all the yelling and screaming, but she did. Her friends and family meant the world to her. Mom’s hugs were long and she held you so close and tight and for a VERY long time. She was a proud Avo and when the grandkids came to visit, they never left the house without a $5 bill tucked in their pocket to “go buy an ice-cream”, she would say.
Mom was ever-so caring. We have had such an outpouring of love and support, kind words and people sharing their fond memories of a woman who left us under such horrible circumstances. We are all touched by the thoughts and prayers and condolences from so many! We will, and we also ask everyone to cherish their memories of our mom. We must never forget someone who gave us so much to remember.
The last few years have been difficult with mom’s spinal stenosis and on-set of dementia. It’s never easy to see someone in constant pain and constantly struggling. It was heart-breaking to have her move into a nursing home. Once again, she went kicking and screaming and once again, she eventually adapted and grew to enjoy her new environment. So much so, that she was appointed the very important task of folding resident bibs; and, nobody folds bibs quite like our mom, don’t even try! This gave her purpose and once again, she thrived!
We will miss her great cooking and baking and sadly, we will never know her secret recipes because when you’re Portuguese, who needs a recipe? We will miss her fashion. She loved her costume jewelry (something that each of us here is wearing today) and she didn’t hesitate to mix patterns and colours. Let’s just say, she had a style of her own but she also always had class and elegance. Just don’t let her see you wear anything too revealing because she wouldn’t hesitate to adjust your outfit if need be.
Our hearts are broken. On Christmas Day, just shortly after learning our Tio Manuel had passed away, we received that dreaded phone call from the nursing home to say mom had tested Positive for COVID. Not only were our cousins still grieving the loss of their father, two weeks to the day, we had to tell our Tia she had also lost a dear sister.
Mom, you are now @ peace and free from pain. You travelled the world and will be remembered as the Tia who spoke English, the sister who kept her siblings in line, the Avo who adored her grandchildren, the mother (and mother-in-law) who was often a best friend and confident, a loving wife and a dear friend to so many.
We are truly sad that your funeral service isn’t being held in your Parish, your second home. The church would be full, Se-nhor Americo would say a few words on behalf the community and your choir would be singing. Well, you are now reunited with our dad and it won’t be long before you will be singing again, this time with the Angels in Heaven.
A piece from Uncle Bob:
Mom was renowned for her cooking. My friends knew that if they were coming over, or if I was expected to ever leave, they were gonna have to eat something. That was just it, she always gave of herself and thought of others first. In University she felt bad that my girlfriend, now wife, lived on residence and might not always have a home cooked meal. On many occasions I’d come home, and there they were, having supper together. BUT, not to be jealous because their dinners together, in her own words were, “ so cute “ .
Mom’s sense of servitude stemmed from her cherished, early days at St. Michael’s Hospital. “The good times”; she called them. When no one could catch her, running from floor to floor delivering trays of food. She said it broke her heart to leave her friends there. But she had to move on. She soon found purpose at Eaton’s. She helped open and then run their bakery for years to come. (By the way, thanks for all the samples mom). We always said that Eaton’s would have to close before she would ever leave. I guess the point I am trying to make is that she was with you ‘til the end.
One of the greatest acts of servitude you did as Matriarch of our family was take care of our dad. At first it wasn’t too bad. You would get him in and out of the chair lift or out of bed. Even as you grew weaker, your legs may have given out and we knew you were tired, but your heart grew stronger. I can still picture you using your walker and still finding the strength to push dad ahead of you in his wheelchair. Don’t worry mom because there are no wheelchairs allowed in Heaven. It’s now dad’s turn to take care of you again. For both of you to walk as much as you want, just like; “the good times”.
You always taught me that serving others was the toughest job in the world. Yet you never let it show, you made it look easy and you loved doing it. I can only hope to follow in your footsteps and live by your example.
Until that day we meet and we WILL walk together again; “ Ma Abence-me”
