Irene taught us the meaning of Christmas and one of my fondest memories is the time that Joey and I decided to surprise her with a small decorated tree hidden in the alcove under the stairs (where the laundry chute ended)... I learned about Christian faith and the different ways that God connects to us all... she truly was a gift in my life and in the lives of all my family... I thank you for this awesome privilege... much love and celebration for a life well lived, a love freely shared and a humour that bubbled up always to soothe and cajole... Yehi zichra baruch... may her memory be a blessing always

Tribute to Irene (affectionately known as Coolie)
Please accept our deepest condolences for the loss of your beloved mother Coolie. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this very difficult time.
Coolie was my best friend for many years. During the fifties and early sixties we lived in the same house for many years; we cooked, shared and ate together. Coolie was always there for me and my children; and was the unsung adopted mother of my children. Words are inadequate to express my gratitude of her faithfulness to me and my children. But we will always hold the memory of your Mom in our hearts.
We are sorry for your loss and were shocked and numbed when we heard the news as we were not expecting it. But we are thinking of you and sharing in your sadness and wishing we could be there in person to share your grief and comfort you.
May the love you share as a family strengthen you through the days ahead. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We love you. God bless the family. ❤
On behalf of Violet Swanston and children❤

I know I speak for my brothers and sister when I say how major a role Irene played in our lives throughout much of our childhood and beyond. She was (as is often said) there for each and every one of us. Irene never scolded us or got angry and that made us even more careful not to cause her unnecessary work or aggravation. She was always calm and accepting; a patient listener who made us feel that she appreciated our company. Even our various pets (and some of Joey’s and mine were quite exotic) could not cause Irene to lose her cool or her quiet humor.
One of my favourite pastimes was “helping” Irene in the kitchen which meant being generally underfoot and stealing scraps of food being cooked. Every return from shopping was followed by my modelling new clothes for Irene’s unconditional approval.
I loved hearing her tell of her family and childhood growing up in the islands of the West Indies, St. Kitts and Nevis. At some point as a young teenager I began to realise that what we gained by Irene’s closeness, Irene’s children missed. I can only express our gratitude for the generosity of spirit they have always shown us in sharing their caring mother with us until this day. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. It is comforting that Irene’s wish to return to her beloved West Indies is being carried out by her wonderful and caring family. Her memory is truly a blessing for them and for us.

I remember many times when Irene z"l [Zichrona LiVracha, Hebrew for "May her memory be a blessing"], was there for me, as a child, and even teaching me how to sew and to launder by hand, when I was going to enter the IDF [Israel Defence Forces] a few months after my 18th birthday.
She said, "Joey, Before you know it, you will have stripes to sew onto your sleeves. You will be a Corporal, and then a Sergeant,
and who knows? Even an Officer! And you will need to know how to wash your own clothes, when you are far from home. And you might need to know how to do simple cooking, like peeling potatoes and making an omelet..."
So she taught me tasks like that, as well.
And everything she taught me, helped me during my Compulsory Service, and then my Active Reserves Service, and generally in life.
But mostly, I remember the times when I'd get home from school, and since my Jewish Day School, USDS, got out earlier than Associated Hebrew Day School, where my siblings went, and because I was a 10 min. walk away, and they were 30 min. away by bus; I got to spend a lot of 'quality' time with Irene one on one. And I remember all those times with pleasure and thankfulness.
Irene, you will be sorely missed by all who knew you, but by few so much as I.
But I know you are with G-D now, and as you quoted from Genesis at your 90th birthday party, G-D said that those who bless the Children of Israel will be Blessed by HIM.
I, one of them, have truly felt blessed by you, since you came into my life.
And May those who mourn you be Consoled By G-D, and May they know no more sorrow.
Joey
