Obituary of Mr. Evagelos "Evan" Kyriazopoulos

Please share a memory of Mr. Evagelos "Evan" to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness our family announces the passing of Evan Kyriazopoulos on Saturday, June 8, 2019 in Barrie after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 52.

Evan was born in Toronto on November 9, 1966 to his parents Bill and Penelope. At 9 years old, he returned to Greece with his sister and parents. However, at 17, Evan sought greater opportunities and returned to Canada, much to the delight of his first cousins Ted, Christina, and Aunt Maria and Uncle James Paris.

Evan will be forever remembered by his many relatives and friends in Greece, especially his loving parents and by his sister Anna, husband Christos and their children.

Evan went on to be educated in computer programming and began a long and very successful career in this field. It was through this passion, that he eventually met his wife and soul mate, Shelly Hummel. They spent their first 10 years of their 25 beautiful years together living and enjoying life and their friends in Toronto. After many adventures and much experience being an uncle and aunt to their nieces and nephews, Shelly gave birth to their greatest passion and joy, their daughter Poppy.

Together, they moved to and built a full life in Barrie and spent many happy times with Shelly’s sister, Tammy and her boys.

The neighbourhood that they chose to raise their daughter provided them with many close and long lasting friendships. So much so that Evan considered his friends’ children as his own. His sharp wit, humour and intelligence were enjoyed by everyone who met him.

It should be noted that in the face of a very aggressive illness, Evan’s true character rose to the challenge. He was undaunted, relentless, and always filled with humour and love, no matter what challenges the illness presented. An avid sports fan, he cheered the Leafs and Raptors with great zeal to the end. He touched the lives of many, and we all raise a tall glass of dark ale to you Evan, you will be greatly missed.

We would like to thank the Care Team at Princess Margaret for their guidance, support and care throughout his journey, as well as the doctors and fantastically supportive nurses in the Palliative Care Centre at Royal Victoria Hospital during his final weeks.

Evan has requested that for those who are able, to please donate blood. He relied on many blood transfusions for strength and well-being, and would like to give back so that others will also be able to enjoy more time with friends and loved ones in time of crisis or illness.

Also, Evan asked that parents please vaccinate their children against the HPV virus to possibly save the life of a loved one.

A service will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at 11 a.m. at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church located at 222 Burbank Drive, North York, Ontario, M2K 1G2.
