Obituary of Mr. Danny "Poppy" McNeil

Please share a memory of Mr. Danny to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Danny “Poppy” McNeil

With heavy hearts, the McNeil Family announces that our beloved Poppy, Daniel “Danny” McNeil, took his last breath on December 29, 2018.

The by-product of Big Pond and Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Daniel Jerome McNeil was born February 27th, 1942 to a hard-working coal mining family and parents Dorthey (Taylor) and Daniel McNeil Sr. both of which are predeceased.

At the age of 18, Danny left his hometown in Nova Scotia to move to Toronto where he became very good friends with Roland (Rollie) Campbell. In 1962 Danny would meet Rollie’s baby sister and the love of his life, Glenda. They would marry on November 25th, 1963; both creating a lifetime of cherished memories and strong family legacy.

Danny was a loving husband, father and grandfather known for his infectious laugh and awesome sense of humor. He always had a great joke or funny story to tell and often asked to emcee at special events. Danny was extremely active in the church and the community with many charitable organizations – through these charities he touched the lives of thousands, many of which would never even know.  His charitable work included St. Vincent de Paul, Knights of Columbus where he was a Past Grand Knight, Former District Deputy and a faithful navigator of the 4th Degree Team, Rosalie Hall, St. Barnabas Parish, Good Sheppard Mission, Indigenous Housing and Knights Village Co-operative housing, just to name a few.

Danny retired from the Toronto District Catholic School Board in 2009 where he was the Head Custodian at St. Boniface Catholic School – he was loved by staff and students alike. Many remember the special Team Room he made for them.

Danny will be sorely missed by his loving wife Glenda and his children Darrell (Cherene), Glen (Melanie Predeceased) and Ryan and his four cherished grandchildren Brandon, Gavin, Christopher and Brittany.

Danny will also be lovingly missed by all his brothers and sisters: He was Predeceased by; Joseph “Joe” McNeil (Dell), Roddy McNeil (Linda), Maureen MacKinnon (Allan), Theresa McNeil (Robert Predeceased) Charles “Georgie” McNeil (Debbie), William “Bill” McNeil (Dee), John “Curly’ McNeil (Mary Burke), Marie Spencer (Eric) Dorothy McNeil (Joe) Florence Jean in infancy.

Survived by siblings Francie Armstrong (Warren Predeceased), Tony McNeil (Angie), Terrence “Terry” McNeil, Anne Marie Rancourt (Guy), Bobby McNeil and Kenneth “Louie” McNeil (Sue), Jeanette Spencer (Aloysius “Wishy).

He will also be sadly missed by numerous nephews, nieces, extended family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation or the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
