Mr. Jack Ryan

Obituary of Mr. Jack Ryan

Please share a memory of Mr. Jack to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jack (John Michael) Ryan, who left us peacefully on December 22nd, 2024, at the age of 93.

Jack was born on January 14th, 1931, to Isabelle (Pamphilon) Ryan and Basil Ryan in Toronto and was the second of seven children.

He was an avid motorcyclist and photographer in his youth and later took over his father’s hardware store alongside his brother, Lawrence. The iconic Ryan’s Hardware was a fixture in The Beaches neighbourhood of Toronto for decades and was known affectionately to many patrons as “The Jack & Larry Show”.

He married Peggy Brophy in 1961 and was a devoted father to their five children. He was active in the Precious Blood Catholic parish for many years and later with St. Bartholomew’s and St. John’s in Toronto.

Jack was a happy stoic and natural storyteller. He enjoyed the company of his extended family and friends, relishing opportunities to share jokes and stories with them.

After retiring in 2004, Jack enjoyed immensely the time he spent with his cherished sister, Maureen.

In 2022, he suffered a stroke but was able to remain in his home with the assistance of his dear friends Wanda Strickland and Ed Watt.

He will be dearly missed by his children Jennifer (Jim), John (Sharon), and Joe (Donnalynn) and his grandchildren Stephanie (Mackenzie), Joshua, Christian (Juliet), Jackson and Isabella, great grandchildren Brandon and Lilly, as well as by his brother Steve (Lynda), his sister, Maureen Malcho, sisters-in-law Riet, Doris and Helena Ryan and Kathleen (Charlie) Morton and Nan Brophy, and many nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his wife Margaret ‘Peggy”, his children Mike and Shannon (Kevon) and his brothers, Joe, George, Terry and Larry.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 2nd from 4 to 7pm at Ogden Funeral Homes, 4164 Sheppard Avenue East, Scarborough, ON M1S 1T3.
