Obituary of Mr. Edmond C. Merchant
Edmond Calder Merchant passed away peacefully on September 18, 2024 at Sunnybrook Hospital. Born March 1, 1939, in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago. He was a loving brother, father and grandfather. He leaves behind a brother Carly, son Darren, a daughter Raquel, and five grandchildren Mikayla, Jordon, Alisa, Blair and Raven.
Edmond also known as Eddie was a dedicated welder learning the trade from the family business back in Trinidad. Learning this skill was instrumental to his career ahead. Eddie would get an opportunity to come to Canada to make a mark on the welding industry. Starting off in Quebec, he eventually made his way to Toronto. Once settled in Toronto, Eddie provided crucial welding services for most of the new construction in city. He also made his mark on the Caribana scene. He had his own band "Eddie Merchant and Associates" from 1981-1989. He is a five-time winner of "Band of the Year". Upon his retirement from welding and Caribana, he still made a point to stay connected to Caribana in any way he could. Eddie remained in the background to bend wire parts for the Mas Camps from the comfort of his home.
Eddie had an incredibly positive personality that could be felt once you were in his presence. He always looked at the bright side of things even when it was difficult to. Throughout his cancer journey he faced every obstacle with an outstandingly good spirit. He was able to overcome this battle for a few years before the cancer returned. Again, Eddie faced this challenge with positivity, but unfortunately, he was not able to beat it this time. Even though the light that he shone on earth is no longer burning, his light will still live on in all the lives he's touched.
