My Tribute to Uncle 'Artley'
Uncle Ottley, whom for years we called Uncle 'Artley' was a true GENTLEman. Tall, handsome, quiet spoken and with a touch of class!!
Youthful impressions last forever, and the most endearing impression I have of my uncle was stamped in my heart and mind as a young 13 year old boy.
The ISCF Group at Combermere school of which I was a member, was making it's first missionary trip to the neighboring island of St. Vincent. I wanted so much to be part of that trip 1). Because all of my friends were going and 2). I had never been on an aeroplane before. There was just one problem standing between me and that trip - We had no money!
After chatting with my mother, she suggested I write a letter to Uncle 'Artley', not to beg for money, but to 'pitch the idea on why I wanted to be part of this historic pilgrimage' to him. Though she never use those words, that was the gist of what she prompted me to do.
For me that was easy! I was always a student of literature, and I loved to write. And so I put pen to paper and basically wrote a short story on why I wanted to go to St. Vincent during the Summer. Uncle 'Artley's response was immediate and it was decisive. He loved it!!
Within weeks - because of him, I was taking my first plane ride and being part of a mission that not only shaped my worldview of God, people and community, but also changed the course of my life for good!
Uncle 'Artley' you have been an example of generosity and love. I have said thanks to you many times before for the gift of opportunity you opened for me. You have left an indelible print on my life, heart and emotions, that I shall carry all the days of my life.
It is now your time to rest with your ancestors and in the arms of your GOD. REST in PEACE and RISE in GOD'S GLORY!
