Elsworth was my husband Roy's best friend in their childhood days. He later became the Godfather of our first son Dale. I followed him in his singing career. May God welcome him into His heavenly kingdom. May he rest in peace.

My memories of Elsworth James was seeing a tall strong man with a huge lovely smile. Always heard of his musical dreams and aspirations for his love of Soca and Calypso music. He certainly had an enormous vision for this genre of music. RIP Mr. James

Husband, father, artiste, promoter, friend, not necessarily always in that order…. that was Elsworth James. With his bright smile and hearty greeting, he brightened the gloomiest day. Never one to give up, he persevered with the mission of bringing Calypso and Soca, the music of Trinidad and Tobago, into the mainstream of Canadian entertainment. This was no easy task, but he went about it regardless of the financial difficulties that were ever present. This, coupled with the slings and arrows that came from his own community made his task even more difficult. But with his never say die attitude, and the support of his beloved wife Margaret, he weathered the storm. Because of his perseverance, Calypso and Soca have become an integral part of the entertainment scene in Canada. As we say goodbye to Elsworth, let us not forget the sacrifices made by him and his family in promoting the culture of Trinidad and Tobago. Rest easy Sir, you’ve done well.

Sir, you were one of the first individuals to put us on a large scale event. You were a stalwart of our culture before it was cool to promote it. Your laugh and knowledge has helped so many in the Caribbean community. Fly high and sing Soca my friend. Condolences to your family.
Thank you

Elsworth James...husband, father, friend, artiste, event promoter. He was all that and more. His smile was like a ray of sunshine regardless of the weather, his greetings always positive. Elsworth lived for his family and for the promotion of his culture. Coming from Trinidad and Tobago, his mission was to spread the gospel of Calypso and Soca across the Canadian landscape, both as an artiste and as a promoter. While he gave us a number of sweet calypsos, such as Calypso Music, Afeisha, Minister Farrakhan and others as an artiste, his main focus was on promoting the music. As a promoter, financial success was not always at his doorstep but he maintained his tenacity and persevered. It was a difficult row to hoe, but he stuck to it with the ardent support of his wife, Margaret. Today the calypso and soca rhythms of Trinidad and Tobago form one of the more popular musical genres in the spectrum of Canadian entertainment, mostly thanks to Elsworth James. He laid the foundation and can now receive his well deserved rest. Rest in Peace Elsworth.

A wonderful brother has left us. He was called upon to carry the cultural torch, an responded with honour. A lasting memory was in the band Successions circa 1965. The Successions had just won the National Pop Gear competition, and we appeared at the Olympic theatre in Belmont to do an early Saturday morning show. We were every bit of 17 year old. A young David Rudder opened the show. We were backed by Bradley on the electric Piano and the rest of the Esquires band. The Successions at this time was led by my cousin Robert . The rest of the band was Derek, Earl , Vaughn and Elsworth. I led off with " Spinning Wheel" and Eldred brought down the house with an Otis Redding tune " far far, far. What a morning ! He really was born to be a star. Condolences again to the entire family. May you bask forever in his joyous memories.

Margaret, please accept my sympathy. My husband Jayson, called Elsworth Brother J - they were indeed "brothers from different mothers". Both men loved music as much as they loved each other's company and there was always a lot of laughter in their interactions. Elsworth, continue to spread your love for our culture in the great beyond.

My sincere condolences to Margaret and the extended family. I performed with Elsworth over the years in different settings. We were part of the band called Crash together, both doing lead vocals. We've had many musical adventures together. You were a trail blazer and has set the stage for future entertainers. For that thank you. May your soul rest in eternal and everlasting peace ... until we meet again

20 years ago I sat down with Elsworth in his Richmond Hill home to conduct an interview for my university paper on World Music.
What an honour it was to learn about the history of Calypso from an artiste and fellow Trinidadian. He was so generous with his time, words, and insights. His passion for the artform and mission to share the culture with others was clear.
Thank you Elsworth for your contribution. Your music will live on, much like your bright smile shines through on the faces of your children.
