Obituary of Mrs. Violet Chinamah Latchana
Violet Latchana was born at Fyrish Village, British Guiana (now Guyana) on March 19, 1939 and died in Toronto weeks after her 85th birthday, on April 2, 2024.
Violet was predeceased by husband David, who passed away on August 15, 2019, after 61 years of marriage.
Violet had a distinguished career lasting over 30 years as a teacher in Guyana (as did David), serving in several schools, and at the time of retirement was headmistress at Belvedere Primary School.
In the Albion community, both Violet and David were active members of Bethel Presbyterian Church, steps away from the family home at Albion Front. Violet was recognized for her work with women’s organizations in the Presbyterian Church in Guyana. After migrating to Canada, both attended Malvern Presbyterian Church in Scarborough where they served in the choir and Violet volunteered as envelope secretary.
Violet will be sorely missed by her children, grandchildren, siblings, cousins, and in-laws.
She is survived by her children Martin, Michael (Shaneeza), Marlon (Indira), and Marcia (Martindale); and grandchildren Kristen (Rahul), Nadine, Maya, and Joshua. She was predeceased by great-granddaughter Kareena.
One of 12 children of James and Lilian, she will also be missed by her surviving sisters Annie and Rosemarie, and brothers Sydney, Edward and Desmond; she was predeceased by siblings Jack, Reginald, Rosalind, Oscar, Stanley and Arnold.
Violet had very close and lasting friendships with David’s family and will be missed by his surviving siblings Mabel, Ivy (Ronald) and Florence, plus his nieces, nephews and cousins.
May her soul rest in peace.
