My first memory of tito Briccio was when he came to stay at our house from the Philippines with tita Susan. There was a flurry of preparation, and they stayed in the room downstairs. I used to go and stare at them early in the morning as they slept (or tried to anyway), this youngish couple, thinking they’re not as old as my parents, so they must be fun.
It was true. Tito was that terrifying uncle who flipped his eyelids inside out and would chase you around. He would put out m&m’s in a line and I would happily eat them like Pac Man while he laughed. As soon as they were able to get a place, we happily invaded, rolling around in a ball with our cousins often, after school and on the weekends. He was awesome to behold, quite sweary and funny; I loved his story joke telling, his ability to command an audience. He was the one who gave me “Oor Wullie” a Scottish comic book signed by the author whom I think he met during his hotel days. Little did he know that would become my main source of reading entertainment for the next 5 years. Thanks to him, I can surprise and amaze many a Scott with my obscure knowledge of their beloved comic strip and understand the thickest of accents.
Our families have always been closely intertwined and it will take quite an adjustment to accept he will no longer liven up any more or our family gatherings as he always has done. Tito Briccio was one that we and many others always counted on, loved to see and be around. My condolences to the Madarang family for this loss, but they have gained an angel and I hope that is a small comfort.
Rest in Peace tito Briccio, say hi to my ma for me.
