Obituary of Mr. Lancelot Godfrey Wong

Please share a memory of Mr. Lancelot to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Lance was born on April 10, 1940, as the 10th child of 13 to Laura Kirby and George Wong in the small town of Spalding in Jamaica. With so many children, it was a difficult life for Laura and her brood, and some of the siblings were sent to live with other relatives. At the age of 11, Lance was fortunate to go see his father in Kingston at the shop he owned. He settled in Kingston and enrolled in Wolmers College.

Handsome and debonair, it was during his teenage years that he was introduced to Violet Chin Loy, who he pursued with a passion. Violet enjoys telling the story of Lance borrowing his brother’s racing bike and proudly peddling downhill to show off. Unfortunately, he did not know how to brake on this new bike and ended up speeding past her, narrowly missing the oncoming bus, and crashing onto the sidewalk. Brushing off his bruised body, he bravely put on a smile for Violet and so began his love relationship with this beautiful girl who became his wife on January 29, for 67years. Lance and Violet had 4 children - Rory, Janet, Phillip, and Angie. Sadly, Phillip passed away as an infant.

Lance was a diligent and hard worker, and his sister Jean got him a job with Grace Kennedy in the accounting dept. This is where he found his aptitude for numbers and did very well at his job and was well-liked by his co-workers. Over the years, he developed his business acumen and grew in his knowledge of finances.

In 1967, Lance moved his family to Christiana, a town not far from his birth place. He  partnered with his brother Eric to purchase and manage a wholesale shop that prospered and provided nicely for them all.

Always wanting what was best for his family, Lance again moved his family to Toronto Canada in 1973. He was the proud owner of 2 Baskin Robbins stores. His whole family pitched in and worked for the success of the business and a better life for them all.

In 1980 while visiting his siblings in LA, Lance received the Lord in his heart and continued to dive into the Word strengthening his faith and keeping himself on the straight and narrow path. He had a powerful praying heart that lifted prayers daily for his beloved family and friends, and also helped him to weather the 6 years of cancer that wreaked havoc on his body. He has fought the good fight and won extra years of life with his loving and caring wife. He was a man of solid faith, a good provider and protector for his family, and one who wanted them to prosper in all their ways.

On September 12, 2023, Lance passed from this life into his new body and is forever healed and rejoicing with Jesus, his Lord and Savior! He will be greatly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and forever loved in their hearts!
