Obituary of Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Treuer

Please share a memory of Mrs. Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

TREUER, Mary Elizabeth (Beth)  (nee McGeeney) – Our beloved Beth died  on March 15, 2023, in her 84th year at Seven Oaks Nursing Home in Scarborough after a long struggle. Loving wife of James (Jim) for almost 60 years.  Dearest mother of Maureen Dawson and her partner Ron Girardin, Kevin and his wife Sandy, Kathleen, and James. Loving grandmother of Adrian, Cassandra, Elodie, Connor, Morgan, Rylie, Brody and Noah. Also fondly remembered by Allen Dawson, Camilla Urdal and Joanne Burleigh and the many, many friends she made in her lifetime. Beth was predeceased by her parents Patrick and Frances McGeeney.

Beth, or Bethy, as we called her was kind, funny, generous and whip smart. She grew up in the Beach when the Beach wasn’t cool. She went to St. Joseph’s College School and became a teacher, working at Corpus Christi School. Bethy met Jim, also a teacher, when they both taught there. Beth left teaching and started working in the Advertising Department of the Toronto Star where she made so many friends - both colleagues and customers. She worked in many areas of the department and there was no one who gave better customer service than Beth. She retired after 42 years and moved to Newcastle, Ontario.  After moving to Pickering in late 2020, Beth entered hospital and then moved to Seven Oaks in early 2021. In March 2021, we got the news that Beth had pancreatic cancer and was given three months to live. In her usual Irish fashion, she proved everyone wrong and lived for two years. It wasn’t easy for her, but we are grateful for the extra time we were provided. A special thanks to all of the amazing staff at Seven Oaks Nursing Home especially Sandra, Karen, Yonette, Rose and Stacey and so many who made it a home for her.

Friends will be received at the Ogden Funeral Home, 4164 Sheppard Ave. E. (just west of Midland) on  Monday, March 20 from 4-8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church,    1 Dormington Dr., Scarborough on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.  Funeral Mass will be available on livestream. Interment at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Variety Village or Easter Seals would be appreciated.

Anyone who knew Beth knows she loved Canada Dry Ginger Ale, Black Licorice or Haagen-Daz ice cream. We know she would love it if you picked up some of these treats and shared them in her honour.
