Obituary of Miss. Monica Myrnella Clarke
(February 23rd, 1937 – February 9th, 2023)
It is with great sadness and much love that we mourn the passing of Monica Myrnella Clarke, who left this world on Thursday, February 9th at the age of 85. Monica held many roles throughout her life: mother, grandmother, and sister to name a few. She was a kind and caring soul, and she will be dearly missed by her loved ones.
Monica was born on February 23rd, 1937, to Alexander Clarke and Zenna Dawkins-Clarke in Clarendon, Jamaica. She was the youngest of 7 children and went on to have her own big family. While living in Jamaica, Monica worked as an office assistant at the Monymusk Sugar Factory until she migrated to Canada in 1993. She would often put herself last and work through her vacation days, so that her children would never be deprived of food or fun.
After coming to Canada, Monica put her whole heart into being the best grandmother; whether it be teaching the littles to read and write, taking on babysitting duties, or cooking and sharing her love of Jamaican cuisine.
Everyone who knew Monica realized what a sweet, hardworking, and sometimes feisty woman she was. She loved her church hymns, crosswords puzzles and gameshows. And how she loved her soap operas! At any day of the week, she could recap their storylines in great detail and tell you who had amnesia, who betrayed whom, and who was getting married.
Monica had broken her hip a few months before her passing which affected her mobility, and in her final days, her children say she asked them, “How am I going to bring water to Jesus?” That’s the kind of person Monica was – faithful, giving, and grateful until the very end.
She is survived by her 9 children, 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and many more loved ones. She is predeceased by her parents and 5 of her siblings.
A visitation will take place on Friday, February 17th from 5pm-8pm at Ogden Funeral Home in Scarborough, Ontario (4146 Sheppard Ave. East).
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 18th from 10am onwards at Faith Miracle Temple in Scarborough (2 Nobert Road).
Monica’s final resting place will be Clarendon, Jamaica.
