Obituary of Ms. Thelma Theodora Pompey

Please share a memory of Ms. Thelma Theodora to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Thelma Theodora was born in Richmond Hill, St. Vincent on September 17, 1938 to Jane Octavia Joseph and Arnett (Sydney) Glasgow. She came from a large, religious family and spent her formidable years in St. Vincent and Aruba.  She attended school at Caribbean Union College in Trinidad and studied nursing.

Thelma immigrated to Canada in 1965, settling in Toronto where she started her career in nursing at Toronto Western Hospital as an RNA (registered nursing assistant). Shortly thereafter, she married Enville (Elvin) Pompey in 1968, with her sister Patsy and her husband George being the Matron of Honour and Best Man.  Thelma and Elvin became parents to Anne in 1969.  In March 1974, Thelma became a Canadian citizen and later on that year gave birth to a son, Michael.  She continued her nursing career, specializing in geriatrics at Cummer House, True Davidson Acres, Scarborough Centenary and Scarborough General Hospital where she spent 17 years. During that time, she went back to school to enhance her skills, receiving certificates in Medication and Aseptic Medicine. She retired in 1996, but she missed nursing so much that she returned to her calling in 1998, this time working part time primarily at Tendercare Nursing Home until retiring for a second time in 2010 at the age of 72.

By 2011, Thelma's health began to falter, first with diabetes, a mild stroke in 2014, then being diagnosed with dementia in 2015.   Unfortunately, on October 1, 2021, while hospitalized in Scarborough Centenary, our loving Mom Thelma went to be with the Lord.

Thelma is survived by her children, Anne and Michael, "daughter-in-law" Erika, her former husband, Elvin, sisters Tudene Glasgow, Teroline Glasgow, Gloria Kitamen and many nieces, nephews and friends.

May God Bless her and keep her safe.
