Rev. Roy Upton was a greet man of God who served us at NPC Valley Road, Nairobi, Kenya. I still remember one of the services where there was a cartoon of Rev. Roy Upton with a new hair cut and earnestly urging the members to contribute to the new assembly. His comment "I am responsible of the announcement in the bulletin, but not the drawing of myself" Quite some laugh since he had actually got a new hair cut that weekend. A man of great zeal for the souls - I remember him preaching to us about his family genealogy and the way it had changed down the years - yet the Jews, scattered throughout the world still had a commonality that united them as one nation after the Babylonian captivity and being in exile for close to 2000 years - God's miracle for his special people.
May this family find comfort in that our Pastor preached and lived for Jesus. Shall we finish the race also so triumphantly? May we take heart even during this time of moaning - our God knows it all and we can totally depend on Him even in these difficult times. Thanks also for allowing your beloved to serve us in Africa. Your labor in the Lord is not in vain - I Corinthians 15:58. Amen!
From Paul and Elizbeth Kamau Mbugua- CITAM Thika Road, Nairobi, Kenya.

Our deepest condolences to Ken, Shelly, David, Gordon , and the entire Upton family.
As the alpha son speaking on behalf of the entire Drago family, it is impossible for us to ever be able to put down in words how great of an addition to our family that Roy was when he and our mother Vera both re married in their later years. Roy was unquestionably, an incredibly great father, grandfather, and a great friend towards all of us, and we are all forever grateful how he was such an amazing, loving, and caring, Godly husband to our dear mother Vera.
We all verily believe that together, they were both a truly blessed (“elderly”) couple that both faithfully served the Lord with all of their hearts while also enjoying life together to the fullest, almost like two teenagers in love. We also believe that anyone who was ever fortunate enough to have fellowshipped with the two of them together, would also likely agree as we do, in that it seemed so naturally obvious, that thanks be to God, the two of them were absolutely “meant to be” for each other at that time in their lives. And together, they would both light up the room everywhere they went.
In July 2015, we all pitched in and flew mom and Roy out to our summer home in B.C. for mom’s 90th birthday present. Slocan is a pretty small, remote town (Amanda calls it “Mayberry”). During their two week stay, other than the two of them being very refreshing family guests, mom and Roy had also, pretty well captivated the entire town with their presence during their stay.
Roy would get up every morning and search the town, the small shops, etc. inquiring about any local garage sales etc. The whole town pretty well knew him and also new that he was our step father by the second or third day they had been there. Both mom and Roy attracted so many friends during their stay. Our friends would come over to visit them and mom would hang out with all the girls, chatting about who knows what? But they were always cheerful, laughing, and having good fun together. And Roy would hang out with all of us guys, telling jokes, talking hockey, baseball, and CFL football etc. Amanda and I were so proud of the both of them as they were truly adored by all! Unexpectedly, they also all threw a huge surprise birthday party for mom with a great meal, birthday cake, and bonfire.
Roy has made a lot of good friends in Slocan during his two short stays that he and mom visited us with who have asked Amanda and I to please extend their deepest condolences to the Upton family on their behalf as well.
There are way too many great memorable photos to share from their July 2015 trip, but we have narrowed down and included a handful of these selected ones in our tribute to Roy.
Blessings, Bob & Amanda

Roy and Vera visited us in Malawi, Africa in 2008. It was a crucial time in our ministry to receive encouragement and counsel. We will never forget the impact that visit had on our remaining five years on the field. Our deepest condolences to the family.

Dear Family members of Rev. Roy Upton,
We were saddened to learn of the passing on to glory of Rev. Roy Upton. Our heartfelt condolences are extended to all of you.
We have precious memories of his ministry in the land of Kenya when he was the Senior pastor of Nairobi Pentecostal Church (now CITAM Valley Road). It was during his time of ministry in Kenya that he oversaw the construction of the present church (which seats 4500). He was both a gifted administrator and an evangelist. In exercising his gift of evangelism we saw people lining the altars when the call to respond was given, to repent of sins and to believe in and receive Jesus as Saviour and Lord.
God worked with Pastor Upton in his ministry at NPC. Let me share an example of something I personally witnessed: In this one service so many people came to surrender their lives to Jesus. Counsellors were dealing with several people. I personally dealt with two and was about to deal with a third. I thought maybe the person, because of this long time of waiting, may be wondering why they even came to the altar but the moment I began to speak to the person there was a great sense of the power and presence of the Holy Spirit and with that sense came a word from the Lord,” …and the Lord worked with them confirming his Word with signs following. (cf Mk 16:20) My heart was gripped with the realization that this was indeed a sign following, the miracle of the new birth taking place in the heart of a seeker before me. The Word was confirmed and being confirmed in many hearts that day. On another occasion we went to prayer meeting and Pastor Upton started the meeting with an altar call. For sure He was led of the Lord to ask if there were people wanting to accept the Lord as personal Saviour because a whole family responded.
During one period of his ministry at NPC we had a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit. I recall how a gentleman came from Eldoret to a service wanting to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. Pastor Upon invited him to come back for prayer later in the afternoon. A lady heard that invitation and she also showed up and both were filled. After that he invited anyone desiring to be filled with the Sprit to come for prayer on Sunday afternoons. The next Sunday afternoon we saw 35 people being filled and on and on it went. Jesus the Baptizer was there each time and people were being filled with the Spirit. One lady I know was filled and healed at the time when she was filled with the Spirit in a mid-week service.
We witnessed the beautiful spontaneity of the Spirit working through his life and ministry and only eternity will tell how many lives were transformed in Kenya through the gospel he proclaimed in the power and anointing of the Holy Spirit.
Praying for all family members as you celebrate the home going of your very own dear one. Thankfully we sorrow not as others who have no hope. (1 Thess 4:13)
Yours sincerely,
Rev Helen MacMinn

Helen, wonderful tribute and a fantastic recollection of special times at Valley Road. These were great years for my mother and father there in that country in the 80’s.. Dad reflected on them many times and I would suggest that these would have been the best four years of my parents ministry. Thank you so much for taking the time to post here with this information. Invaluable, and we sincerely appreciate it. Thanks again Helen. ❤️❤️

Thank you so much Bishop Odede. Dad thoroughly loved the construction project there at Valley Road and the time they served there in Kenya. My mom & dad were at the right place at the right time during that transition for the Valley Road assembly ❤️
