Tribute to my Papa’ Domenico…
On behalf of my Mamma Tindara, I want to thank all of you, family and friends, for reaching out with a kind word, gesture, phone call, or message. Those of you that knew Domenico well or those of you that knew my Papa’ because you know me or my brother, I send you a heartfelt thank you for your sympathy and kindness.
Given this time of pandemic, I know that some of you wanted to be with us, but could not be present. As such, a glimpse of my father I wish to share with you…
On Friday July 9, 2021, Domenico, loving husband to Tindara, and loving father to my bro and me, Papa’ passed away at the age of 91. Papa’ was born in June 1930, in the contrata di S. Leonardo in Gioiosa Marea, Sicilia on the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. As a young man, he apprenticed in the orchards of Sicily and became an arborist, a master at trimming, pruning, and grafting fruit trees and vineyards. He become a well sought arborist across the vineyards and orchards in Sicily, especially in Catania. His passion in working the fruit orchards carried through his home life in Sicily and later when he married and raised a family. In 1960 he emigrated to Canada married Tindara, and settled to life in Canada. He continued with his passion of gardening, growing amazing fruit and vegetables that he shared with his family and friends. He grew Sicilian zucchini to a length of 6 feet on average, and skillfully knew how to graft a tree with a variety of different pears all on one tree, and cross graft a peach on a plum tree. His fig trees yielded much fruit and so did his lemon and cherry trees, and my grandson Sebi enjoyed fresh picked lemons without flinching to the taste as Nonno’s lemons are tangy, but sweet. I watched Papa’ working at his passions in the garden and in the kitchen, with Mamma always at his side…we learned many things.
Amazing meals also graced our kitchen table with Papa’ and Mamma as a team of sixty years plus. His delicious bread often drizzled with olive oil and anchovies, freselle made to the perfect crispy crunch, and pasta noodles drenched with delicious homemade tomato sauce left us drooling for more. Making tomato sauce was a yearly family celebration that included Nick and me, and all our kids, who gave us two helping hands with the promise of a plate of pasta and fagiolini from his vegetable garden with fresh tomato sauce at the end of the day to celebrate the fruit of our labour. We all devoured everything that Nonni made with gusto. His giardiniera and sopressata, is unforgettable. His wine was made and filtered to perfection. All things he made by hand and from scratch with love.
Papa’s love of nature showed clear in his vegetable garden and his many trees of which he was very proud. He enjoyed taking visitors around his garden and talked with much pride about how much pleasure he took in his backyard and greenhouse.
Dad was known for his sharing of Sicilian barzellette, songs, indovinelli, and his quick and sharp math skills, even though he left school before completing his elementary education, so that he could work and help support his family in Sicily. He was 19 years young when his father passed away in his arms. His family and family celebrations were the best times and pretty much what he lived for and enjoyed. We have many great memories.
Together with his wife Tindara, he raised us, Joanna and Nick. He was proud of his family and children. He loved my mother with his whole heart. He loved Nick and me and Gerry and Maria with his whole heart. He loved his brothers and sisters and cogniati and nieces and nephews, and more so he loved his grandchildren Mara and Adam her husband, Joseph and Laura his wife, Andre and Anna his girlfriend, Cristina, Michael, Spiro, young Domenic, Maria’s daughter Andrea, and his first great grandchild, Sebastian Gabriel. Lately, it was my Sebi that brought a smile to his face that reached his eyes. He loved his family with his whole heart.
His faith in God and devotion to la Madonna del Tindari and Sant’ Antonio was undoubted, and his duty as a husband, father, and love of family was seen in every gesture, in everything he said, and everything he did, every day.
In his last hours of life, though he could barely speak, he squeezed my hands in his and shared words I will cherish and hold dear in my heart.

Grazie papà! Ti voglio tanto bene. Che riposi in pace la tua cara anima. Love you Daddy.

Pippino was amazing! From his garden to his pasta to his soppressata. But mostly for his devotion to family. He did so much for his family and so many others. He loved to laugh and make others laugh. He loved everybody and everybody loved him. We will miss him but he will live on in our thoughts and our hearts. Every time we make pasta or soppressata like he taught us, he will be with us. Every time we work in our own garden, he will be with us. He was not only a good chicken but the best chicken! We love you all and are always here for you. Take some comfort in knowing how much love he has given and how beloved he is to so many.

Our deepest, deepest condolences to the all members of the Sidoti family. Domenic had a smile and a laugh that was always contagious. It made you smile or laugh even when you sometimes didn't know why. When I moved to Toronto to go to university I met Domenic and your family for the first time. Right away he welcomed me to your family and of course made me laugh! I will always have special memories of that time with you.
