Dear Kevin, Markus and Stefan,
When I learned the news about Claudius, I was very sad. Somehow, it did not seem real. People like Claudius should go on forever. As I think about it and look at the many wonderful thoughts that Claudius’ friends and colleagues have shared, I now realize that he will. I also can now understand why I feel the way that I do reading the many messages and knowing that so many others feel the same. I thought that I knew Claudius pretty well but I now see so many more things that he was involved with. I knew that he was a great person from my relationship with him. I got to know Claudius in the early ’90’s as a new wine agent dealing with Vintages. He treated me very well and helped me in many ways. Our meetings were very professional but they became more and more fun. We talked of many things and had some wonderful lunches together. He was such a fund of knowledge on wine but we also spoke more and more about music. Between my musical life with the Symphony and his love of music (and having a son who is an opera singer!) we had much to talk about. Your Memorial Video is wonderful and captures him so well. Just looking at that smile in those photos makes me feel good. Thank-you for doing it.
Kevin, Markus and Stefan, please accept my sympathies and condolences. I am so glad that I got to know Claudius.

I worked with Claudius at the LCBO shortly before he retired. I knew little about Wine. He was more than willing to help me out setting up the tasting and telling me about the wines. And the proper way to open them. Especially Spakling.
He was a good mentor. That is how I remember him. That and the sandals and socks.
RIP.

Kevin and family,
It was with great sadness that I heard about Claudius’s passing. It was my tremendous pleasure and honour to work with him over the years. He was one of my “go to” Volunteers whenever a secondary school group would come in for a tour. He was so knowledgeable and had much to share about the natural world and did so enthusiastically with guests, students, and peers alike. A memory I will keep close is of Claudius, wearing his white Zoo hat, carrying his bag stuffed with krill, artefacts and especially his handmade graphics of greenhouse gases, leaving to join his group in the Tundra Trek to talk about the Arctic and climate change. He kindly gave me those graphics to replicate at some time for other Volunteers. I will miss you Claudius – your commitment, your conversation and keeping me thinking all the time!
To the family, I extend my condolences to you and thank you for sharing him with us all those years,

To Kevin, Markus, Stefan and extended family,
So sorry to hear of Claudius' passing. My sincere condolences to all family members. The photo video was lovely - I watched it twice. I have so many memories of the Biology Club at U. of T., and Claudius and Kevin were a part of it. I was glad to see them at the two reuions we had, 10 and 20 years ago, and the one visit I made to their home with my young son. I also have memories of a group of us working at the "Zoo Building" in the summers - Claudius was there too, in 1969. It is now 50 years since we graduated. My thoughts and prayers are with your whole family.

I had the pleasure of working with Claudius during his days as Buyer at the LCBO and was one of the many agents he would meet with on a regular basis. What inspired me the most was his passion for the business and genuine care he showed to all that he met with. No one person was "more important" than another. He was compassionate, fair and always a gentlemen. I held the ultimate respect for the man, not the position because we was so open, responsive and kind. It was a sad day to see him leave the LCBO as he was loved by so many but all of us knew he would be happy spending more time with his family and passions.
"Mea culpa" was one of his favorite sayings but he never had anything to apologize for... and I will forever miss that infectious smile.
My deepest condolences to the family and friends. The world has lost a remarkable man.

When I first started working at the Toronto Zoo, Claudius was somewhat dubious of me. He put me through my paces with many tough questions, requests (always with the krill!), and suggestions to improve the interpretive stations. When I finally proved myself to him, we became fast friends and remained so until the end.
Claudius returned to the Zoo this past summer – COVID was not going to keep him from his duties. I was always so happy to see him come through the door in his brown flowery face mask and we would have a good chat before he went on his way. A couple of days really stand out in my mind: Claudius was the only Volunteer on duty during a severe thunderstorm and, on another day, during a security issue. I was so worried, but when I ran out to check on him, he just laughed and smiled and said he was fine. Pure Claudius!
I could count on Claudius for many things… to run the orangutan hotspot tent, to explain the complexities of the palm oil predicament to Zoo guests, and to help me choose the best wine for our annual Strawberries & Wine party. I will miss him greatly. Rest in peace, my friend.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about Claudius's passing. In my early career as a Product Consultant, Claudius made me feel welcome and valued my rookie opinion during the round table buying sessions for the Vintages Releases. I admired his passion, incredible knowledge of "all things wine' and his witty sense of humour. To me he was like a Rock Star! Once I became a store Manager, Claudius would come into the store to shop for those special little treasures from the Vintages section. I would hurry over when I saw him to say hello and find out what he was currently doing. I am very sad that I will no longer see his welcoming smile. Kevin, the Fehr Family , I am stunned at the news of Claudius' passing. Claudius and I first met at the LCBO as he walked into the tasting room for the first time. We soon bonded over our common passion for wine. Our discussions over the wines in the tasting room were legendary so much so the we always were the last to leave. This caused us to be summed to John Rallos' office more than once to explain ourselves. Education was another interested we shared, this lead to the creation of the Independent Wine Education Guild. Claudius was always unflappable never more than when began the first WSET course. Claudius calmed the sometimes spirited debates. Claudius, I will miss your company, one never felt better than when sharing a meal with you. May you rest in the arms of Bacchus my friend..

A true gentleman, we will miss him very much.

So sorry to hear this news. Prayers of comfort and peace are with you. Claudius was an inspirational Zoo Volunteer. Twelve years ago, I went to hear my son's commentary on the Zoomobile and decided to walk around afterwards. That's when I met dear Claudius and was amazed at the depth of his knowledge and the caring way he presented it. In conversation, he mentioned the system of volunteering just in case it was something I might like to do. Throughout the last ten years of my volunteering, Claudius has continued to inspire us and all the visitors he meets. I'm sure he's found his niche in the next life and is no longer suffering. Blessings to your family.

Since we got the news, the messages from the Toronto Zoo people that he volunteered with so long have been steadily coming in. Claudius was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the animals. Everyone liked talking with him.
Personally, he and I had so many discussions on some scientific issue or about conservation. But I'll always remember that even on the occasions when we might disagree, I always came away feeling better. He had a magic about him that made you feel good. Maybe it was that smile he always had. Or the passion he showed towards his volunteer duties.
He was a good man. Joanne and I will miss him. Our heartfelt condolences to his family.

My heart-felt sympathies go out to you Kevin as well as your family. I'll miss my lunches with Greg and Claudius, and hearing about what was going on in your family. I really appreciated everything he did for me over the years after I got into the wine business in 1990. His knowledge was unmatched and he shared it passionately and graciously. We also shared a common bond with the environment and I always enjoyed hearing what he was doing at the zoo or with one of his other causes. The world will be a poorer place without him, but I am a better person for having known him.

When I heard the news this weekend so much sadness came over me. I wish I could be with my friends to comfort them, to just be there for them. The Fehrs have always treated me like family. I spent a whole summer there one year and they treated me as one of their own and we remained close ever since. Claudi was one of the sweetest, most generous, and lovely people to walk this planet. I only have wonderful memories of his cooking and perfect wine pairings,of course. The way he so often kept a plate of food for me when I would return to their home from rehearsals, our feisty musical discussions over a glass of wine, he always had an opinion and so did I! Haha! his way of loving life and all living things, his hearty laugh and his jovial personality. Later on Jacob and I were always welcomed with open arms at the Fehrs and Claudi would offer Jacob a nice beverage and they could chat about Europe together. His loss will be felt by many. Jacob and I are with the Fehrs in our hearts during this difficult time.

Claudius was a great light in the world of wine, and helped me (and many others) tremendously as we struggled to succeed in the WSET Diploma exams many years ago. His was a soul of genuine generosity, inviting us (with some flexibility within the LCBO rules I'm sure he had to fight to get 'bent' for us!) to the LCBO tasting lab as well as hosting classes at a large boardroom table in the head office building.
I also make a nod of great respect to Claudius for his love of nature and all living things. This is something we have to advocate and act for ever more so these days.
Finally, sincerely condolences to Claudius' family and friends. He touched so many in his life, that I am sure we *all* consider ourselves close in Claudius' heart. May he rest in peace.
Sincerely,
Eugene Mlynczyk

Dear bereaved, let me express my sincerest condolences. This is a difficult moment already, and losing somebody like Claudius makes it even more so. Judging from the beautiful memorial video he has loved, laughed and loved some more, and was deeply loved in return. And he was a man of service, with always a friendly word. And at the same time, always giving back by making a difference in respecting and preserving nature. In my memory, he will fondly go down as "Mr. Grüner Veltlinrer", the Austrian flagship grape. Claudius was instrumental in adding Austrian wine to the LCBO portfolio. We are very grateful to him for that.
May your loss be lightened by the wonderful memories you share with this lovely man.

I send my deepest condolences to the family of Claudius. His passing is felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Claudius was a founder of IWEG, opening the door to wine knowledge to all of Canada over 40 years ago! As a student at IWEG I clearly remember Claudius walking into the classroom, with that wonderful smile of his, and inspiring the class to learn all we could about the world of wine! Through his encouragement and kind mentorship I was motivated to share this knowledge and do my best to continue his work at IWEG.
Claudius’ interests were many, and he pursued each of them with a passion. In addition to sharing his knowledge and his enthusiasm for wine, Claudius was a valuable contributor to the Toronto Zoo, bringing with him extensive knowledge of nature, zoology and the environment. I remember Claudius and Kevin snorkeling around the lake on a summer afternoon and returning with a detailed analysis of the diversity and health of the plants and fish!
Claudius was a remarkable person. His humble, kind and generous nature will remain in the hearts and minds of all who knew him.

Wine was Claudius’ passion, and he would go to great lengths to share his passion and nurture those around him who expressed an interest. I was fortunate to have been one of those persons. Working as his “assistant” within the VINTAGES department of the LCBO my knowledge of wine grew by leaps and bounds. Claudius was also the nicest person you could ever meet, and I still can hear his voice saying “SUGAR!” when I asked him about a task or a returned phone call that had slipped his mind. My condolences to all who are grieving the loss of Claudius, and I am certain that there are many of us.
I first met Claudius when it was a "slow day" in the Australasia pavilion at the Toronto Zoo. He was studying. As I came to know him better as a fellow volunteer, I also came to know that Claudius was a life-long learner. Before leaving the volunteer lounge for his station, he would invariably select a book from the library to accompany him. He also seemed to have an unlimited amount of passion for learning about animals, and sharing what he had learned.
Claudius also shared good wines with us whenever the Friday volunteers gathered for a pot-luck lunch.
Personally, I always enjoyed hearing Claudius chuckle. It lightened my day.
We have been blessed by having Claudius journey alongside us, a caring and compassionate friend.

We were all so saddened over the weekend to learn of Claudius' passing.
We so much looked forward to our buyers meetings at LCBO/Vintages and never left a meeting without learning something.
He was the LCBO's "secret weapon" with an Encyclopedic knowledge of wine that he was always willing to share with those that had the pleasure of working with him. I will miss his most engaging nature and wonderful smile that always made us feel comfortable and at ease during our meetings. It wasn't until a few years after his retirement that I ran into him on a Toronto Zoo visit with our grandchildren that I realized he could exercise his true passion of nature and animals and generously share it with the young children on their visits to the Zoo. Truly a life well lived. Sincere sympathy to Kevin and his entire family.

My deepest sympathies to the entire family for your tragic loss. We all lost someone special in him. To me, and many others who earlier in their professional life were looking for their way in the wine business, he was a passionate wine enthusiast, a teacher, a mentor, a colleague and a friend. It is not a hyperbolae to say that he helped shape what is today's wine culture in Ontario. The time we spent together at work in the tasting room, or at the informal get-togethers, enjoying a good meal, nice wines and great company is how I will remember him. He was a long-time volunteer for Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) Canada, and dedicated to his patrols every spring and fall. Hip surgery only put this on pause, but he was back at them as soon as he could. He had the utmost patience with everyone, and was superb with children of all ages when he helped at community events. He volunteered at the Zoo and a number of other organizations, and he always greeted folks with a huge smile on his face. That smile was always the biggest when he spoke of his grandkids. We Volunteered at a Butterfly garden at HighBush PS. There was a butterfly release of course. I recall that we shared the curriculum that day with grades K-8. He captivated the kids interest with his knowledge and enthusiasm.
Over the years, I also recall volunteering with him at the Sting Rays site,Panda Tables, the Gorilla tables and the wetlands.
