Obituary of Mr. Wun Cheung Chan 陳煥章先生
With great sadness, we mourn the loss of Wun-Cheung Chan who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 23, 2020, at the age of 96.
He is survived by his loving wife Fu-Choi. He was beloved father of Yao-Chi (spouse Catherine), Kun-Yee (spouse Hung-Hsein), Yao-Chon (spouse Panny) and Yao-Shing. Proud grandfather to Alex, Michael, Adrian, Steven (spouse Cecilla), Karen and Gabriel, and also a respected uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Born in 1924 to a large family in Canton, China, he followed his uncle's family to Kunming, Yunnan for his education in the late-30's. Soon after, the Japanese invaded China and caused extreme hardships all over the country. In order to lighten the burden on his uncle he gave up his studies to enter a government-supported trade school where he was able to learn some skills and earn a small stipend. After graduation, he joined his uncle's family in Calcutta, India where he later married Fu-Choi. His trade skills allowed him to join the merchant marine. Between port visits he studied tirelessly to reach the rank of Chief Engineer, a position he held until he retired. The border conflict between China and India in 1962 forced him to relocate the family to Macau where his children were able to grow up happily and comfortably through his hard work and personal sacrifices - all without asking for anything in return. Throughout his life, he encouraged his children to continue learning and contribute to society. After his retirement, he joined his children in Canada to watch his family continued growth. He was a practitioner of Taoism and became a devotee of the religion.
His life will be celebrated on Thursday, December 31, 2020 at Ogden Funeral Homes, 4165 Sheppard Avenue East, Scarborough, followed by the interment at Pine Hill Cemetery at 625 Birchmount Road, Scarborough, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Terry Fox Foundation or the Alzheimer Society of Canada
