Shastri Stephen Permanand
April 18th, 1969 - October 26th, 2020
It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Mr. Shastri Permanand, resident of Thompson, MB, formerly of Toronto, ON, on Monday October 26th, 2020 in Snow Lake at the age of 51 years.
Shastri spent his life making friends and working hard to provide for and to protect his loved ones. He had an infectious sense of humour and was well loved by all.
Shastri was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad WI and migrated with his family to Toronto in 1969 at the age of 3 months old. He grew up in East York, and attended George Webster, Our Lady of Fatima, and Cardinal Newman schools. Shastri loved learning and understanding the inner workings of things. He was always full of energy and ideas. He began working in the hospitality industry and was a quick study. Soon, he was the chef for a variety of restaurants here in Toronto, Ottawa, Atlanta, St. Petersberg, Churchill. He was at home in the kitchen, he could just as easily cook for a banquet or for the family. One knew that when Shastri was in charge of the kitchen they would be fed and it would be gastronomic.
Shastri’s energy, dedication, and kindness set him apart as he drew people to him like a magnet. You could not walk through a marketplace without him striking up conversation and making connections with people. Shastri had a passion for music. He loved drumming, football, basketball, building things and most of all hanging out with his family and friends.
Shastri will be dearly missed by his mother Kay Permanand (nee Champatsingh), his children Jackson, Ayanna, Anaya, Sascha and Zachari, his sister Anjani (Geoffrey), nieces Tara and Asha. He will be sadly missed by his aunt, Gowrie Sharma, cousins Arun and Nalini Sharma, his UK, US and Trinidad Cousins, his friends and family in Canada and internationally.
Shastri is predeceased by his father Stephen Vishnu Permanand on October 10th, 1984 and most recently his maternal aunt Uma Singh (nee Permanand) on September 9th 2020.
The family will have a private funeral due to Covid restrictions on Thursday November 5th, 2020 at Ogden Funeral Home.
