I first met Dr. Peter Webster at Sunnybrook in 1983 after I had been diagnosed with tuberculosis. He was comforting and approachable and put me on a drug regime that eliminated the disease. I met Peter again 30 years later for ongoing annual CT scans. When I was recalled for a scan due to faulty machinery I decided not to rebook. I was convinced that I was fine. Peter phoned me at home the next day and insisted emphatically that I return and get the scan done. It was that scan that showed stage 1 malignant lung cancer. I will never forget him saying "a tumor in a jar is better than one in your lung". The tumor was removed successfully five and a half years ago.
Peter was a caring and intelligent physician. I think of him often and thank him for his concern, his dedication and his humanity. He saved my life and I am so grateful. My heartfelt condolences to his family for your loss.

The combination of my retirement and Covid sadly means I lost track of my former colleague at Sunnybrook. I just found out (in an OMA publication) that Peter passed away in October.
Peter was my closest clinical associate at Sunnybrook as we shared combined chest rounds in Radiology and conferred almost every day privately on cases of interest.
I don't miss much about working- too hectic- but I do miss my interaction with Peter. He was a terrific human being and physician - and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He'll be missed.

Dr. Peter Webster was a Respirologist I met while caring for an ALS Client in the community. I so admired his knowledge and compassion that he had for treating patients with ALS. He liked to teach while performing his procedures. I learned to change Trach tubes as a result of him teaching me the basics. He would say to me "You should know how to do it, after all you can save his life faster than me driving to get here." He gave me the confidence to perform this task well.
I was saddened to learn of his passing, however, I am glad to know that he was a man of God.
My condolences to his family.

Our deepest condolences to wife Nancy, daughters Beth, Miriam, Nora and the Webster family on the passing of Dr. Peter M. Webster.
Our medical history with Peter goes back to the early 1980’s when my dad was diagnosed with TB and Sunnybrook to this today.
Peter Webster was a wonderful doctor who was most knowledgeable and cared deeply for his patients and always had a smile.
My father’s nick name for Dr. PM Webster was Prime Minister Webster.
I had scarlet fever when I was younger, and was having breathing, fatigue in gym classes in my mid teens. I was waiting for my appointment and in comes Dr. Webster walking his bicycle, and he had curly brown long hair and long beard.
Peter wanted to see how easily I tired, so one test was for both of us to run up 6 flights of stairs at Sunnybrook and he was at the top of the stairs when only made 4 floors and was completely out of breath. He ordered tests and we found the answer to my breathing issues.
My father then having several back injuries and more breathing problems, and we returned back to Dr. Webster, who worked with my dad to help with the breathing issues, and also found the cause of my dad’s back problems and referred him to a Sunnybrook back specialist, after 4 Orthopaedic specialists could not identify the problem.
Dr. Webster was more than a Top Lung Specialist, he was a doctor who helped all his patients, when they could not get answers to other their health problems, while being treated for respiratory issues. He was a doctor of all health professions.
Dr. Webster saved a friend of mine, after she contacted SARS (2nd strain, the deadly strain).
Dr. Webster was missed by all his patients when he took sabbatical, then returned as he missed his patients and colleagues and then later retired in 2018?
No one matched Peter Webster caliber as a lung specialist.
We missed seeing him at the Pulmonary Function Testing Area (aka The Blow clinic) on the 6th floor, even after retirement. He sometimes came in for visits after his retirement and we were lucky to speak with him.
Again, our deepest sympathies to the Webster family, his medical colleagues on the passing of a great man.
He will dearly missed by all, who had the chance to meet him.

Thank you so much Evan & Dianne! It's wonderful to hear brand-new stories, like yours, about my Dad. He was loath to praise himself at home so my sisters and I absolutely adore learning that other people think as much of him as we do. Gratefully yours, Nora M. Webster

know that Peter was an accomplished doctor who treated thousands of people over his long, long career. But the story I wish to share was about how he accidently treated one. Me.
I told him of an issue that I was having taking a certain medication and, within minutes, he was able to link those difficulties with the negative memories I had surrounding the passing of my own father.
Prior to speaking to him I couldn’t see the connection. After speaking to him the connection was so clear I was baffled as to how I missed it. What’s more – upon seeing it, I was somehow freed of it, as well.
He accomplished so much for me that day and he did it in a casual, effortless and expert manner one fine Saturday afternoon in his backyard. Peter will be sorely missed.

Uncle Peter will forever be in my mind as the quiet, calming presence in the Briarhill house. With three daughters and Aunt Nan, that house was always filled with ruckus laughter, unconditional love and the quiet stability that Peter offered in the beautiful way only he could. I will greatly miss Peter’s calming presence, steady smile and generous spirit.

Patients with ALS get respiratory complications of this awful disease which contributes slowly to their deaths. For more than 30 years Dr. Webster treated the patients at the Sunnybrook ALS clinic with compassion and commitment as the ‘Lung Doctor’. He reassured these unfortunate patients and their families that they were receiving optimal treatment of their respiratory problems; they benefited from his gentle concern and his comprehension of their problems. On behalf of hundreds of ALS patients, who are no longer here to voice their thanks and for the support that he gave to them and their families, and to me their ALS nurse, I extend my humble thanks. For 25 years I knew I could call him night or day with my concerns for our patients. It was a privilege to have worked with him. My condolences to Nancy and family. Thank you Dr. Webster.

I first came to know Dr Peter Webster, when he was my first ever oral examiner in medical school back in 1989! When I graduated from UofT medical school, he became a mentor like figure during my residency years in neurology and then subsequently as a friend when I joined the Faculty at Sunnybrook in the late 1990's. He was a brilliant man...in fact...his knowledge base in general medicine, philosophy, history (Western and Chinese), and his love of mathematics and music, often stunned me....trying to grasp his concepts or even understand his vocabulary reminded myself, when I was in grade school, in awe of the teacher! Yes, as time went on, I was able to gather enough courage to call his ideas...dare I say....unique and provocative....and we debated endlessly, poking fun at each other, with endearment and in respect....
He pushed my own understanding of Christian thinking, helping me grow in my faith, and we enjoyed "ribbing each other" as we transitioned from a mentorship to a good friendship....but I always was aware of just what a deep thinker and insightful man Peter was....and I felt often, that I was transported back in time, being instructed by learned saints such as CS Lewis, GK Chesteron or Oswald Chambers!
We shared patients together, served on medical missions together, and attended the same church at Bayview Glen Alliance....I have grown to love him, as a mentor, friend and as a father figure...
Peter always lamented to me that he felt he needed to do more and "being stuck in inertia"....I know very little people who have done so much with his life, dedicating his life to people in the Congo, working on the SARS unit, when we were all too frightened to work on the Sunnybrook D4 ward, and always was "Light to the World" being firm in standing up for Christian Love, whether in politics, caring for the most ill, and remembering the precious gifts the Lord has given us, namely, Jesus, our family, and intellect to always stand for His Word, and not for the views of this world.

I worked with Dr. Webster at Sunnybrook for 32 years. He is one of the most intelligent and caring physicians I have ever met. It was not uncommon to see him at 3 o’clock in the morning to tend to one of his patients. I have also had the experience of attending a lecture he was presenting. His knowledge and presentation was second to none. I stood bedside with him, and although quirky in some of his ways, you knew his patient was always receiving the most excellent and compassionate care. I learned today that this great man has passed away. He was a giant in the medical world and will be sorely missed by countless patients and staff.

Peter was a very well regarded physician and medical administrator, a renowned respiratory physiologist and a highly valued colleague in the Division of Respirology. His wide ranging knowledge of respiratory medicine and physiology was legendary: he seemed to know just about everything there was to know in this field. His questions at research rounds were invariable spot on, and he was always gentlemanly in his approach. His humanitarian contributions in the field of respiratory care for patients with ALS at Sunnybrook will serve as a lasting legacy and be a reminder of his dedication to his patients. On behalf of the University of Toronto's Division of Respirology, I extend our condolences to his wife Nancy and his family.

Peter was a teacher, mentor and colleague for over 40 years. His curiosity, quest for excellence and compassion were as important as the Respirology he taught me. The Respirology has changed and evolved, but the values have stood the test of time. Peter will be missed as a friend and a colleague.

It was an honour to have been Peter's trainee, as an intern on Respirology in 2001, and then as a colleague of his at Sunnybrook. Peter and I had lovely conversations over our mutual love of Africa having both lived and worked there (he in Congo, and me in Malawi) as physicians. In addition to his clinical skills, I also admired his faith and his embodiment of faith through works, reflected in his compassion for patients. For our HIV patients at the Anita Rachlis Clinic, he truly stepped up at the start of the AIDS epidemic in the 80s, providing excellent and compassionate care for our patients at a time where stigma and fear, even on the part of health workers, had great impact on the care our patients received. May his memory be a blessing. Condolences to his family, Adrienne Chan

Dr. Peter was a good friend that I have not seen in a few years. His passing on to heaven was a real surprise. We had some great times at Bayview Glen Church together. He assisted in some of my Fundraising projects to pay off the church mortgage. His lovely family was a real encouragement to others. We had them often play their violins and I just loved and appreciated the classical music they shared. Today we rarely hear that at church.
When someone needed medical advice Peter was right ready to help and point them in the right direction. He loved to joke and share fun experiences we were both a part of. When ever he spoke people appreciated it and listened.
He told me one day of his diagnosis when we were attending a funeral and I had a chance to pray with him right there. His passing brings back a lot of great memories. He will be missed. His work at the hospital was amazing and hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people today are healthier and well, as a result of his wisdom and practice. He will be missed and for me it was a privileged to know him for a number of years. Both Barb and I send our condolences to Nancy, and this wonderful family. May God see you through this season, as you know where Peter is and that today he has no more suffering and is in Gods presence.

Peter was a man of many talents — physician, musician, race car driver (he could navigate the curvy roads of the Laurentian Mountains at a fair speed, smoothly, and without breaking a sweat). There is no doubt that his greatest attributes were that of husband, father, friend, and, most of all, believer. Psalm 1 says, “Blessed is the one who delights in the law of the Lord.” Peter delighted all of us, and I am grateful to have known him.
