Sharleen and family please accept my condolences on the passing of your father and grandfather. Tom and Clemmie were great friends of my parents, Al and Elaine Liverpool. They enjoyed each other's company and I have fond memories of the parties and the laughter. Our parents were part of a great generation of intelligent, articulate and compassionate black professionals. I am proud of them and sorry to see them passing on - but we are their legacy and it is now our turn to carry the ball forward.
I wish you strength and courage during this difficult time. Your wonderful memories of your Dad (grandfather) will carry you through this challenging period.
Warm Regards,
Camille Liverpool-Barnett

The Executive and members of the Toronto Chapter of the Guyana Queen’s College Alumni Association (QCAA Toronto) were saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Thomas Massiah.
Our contact with Dr. Massiah was brief but very impressive. He readily agreed to be the guest speaker at our 2009 Appreciations Award event.
His presentation was very illuminating and it was very interesting to hear about his experience in industry and in the larger Canadian society. His stories also gave us a close look at the challenges that professional minorities faced - that we couldn't have easily gained in any other way.
Our condolences are for his surviving family and friends.
Victor R. Moses
Secretary, QCAA Toronto

Tom was an original, an example for all of us. It was a privilege to have known him and, wanting to share this with my children, I invited him to my home.
Marked by his skin color, his life was a struggle against the forces that tried to keep him in his place. Despite the precepts of working twice as hard to be recognized, he knew how to spot the coded language that told him the game was up and it was time to move on. It was this resilience that defined him.
He joined many organizations to help others but, unlike a few in these organizations, he was not seduced in becoming part of the system. He was amused how some of the black leaders, relished the trappings of this power. There was a simple directness of his personality, which brought him at odds with those who wanted to please.
When I had my series of layoffs, he invited me to his home, looked over my resume and shared the list of contacts he had.
He had an abiding interest in science and was always engaged with arithmetic puzzles. I once solved one by writing a program to search the space instead of looking for insights. He was blown away by this and would always seek me out when we were together. He will be missed.
My sincere condolences to the family.

On behalf of my family and I, we offer our sincerest condolences.
I have had the privilege of meeting Thomas and his wife Pearl through his daughter Sharleen, around the fall 1998. We immediately hit it off due to our interest in science and mathematics that made for interesting conversations and exchanges of ideas. This meeting lead to a dear friendship with Tom and Pearl that seemed just too short a time considering his and Pearl’s 90+ years on this earth.
Tom and I exchanged many a mathematic problem and puzzle through the years with great enthusiasm, savoring the challenge of an elegant solution. Tom’s love of history and politics also gave rise to numerous conversations on both topics flavored with his direct evaluation of many a personage as we enjoyed Pearl’s fine meals to which I was always invited to stay and partake, I very seldom declining either.
Tom’s keen sense of purpose and brilliant mind was a delight to experience as he was always honest, thoughtful, fair and insightful, and yes, very funny at times when it was least expected.
I enjoyed helping him with the formatting of his two books, “Musings of a Native Son” (his autobiography) and “Emanations From The Corpse of Little Burgundy”, his recollections on life in Little Burgundy in its heyday. Both well worth a read.
I very much miss Tom and Pearl and hope the universe does allow for a meeting once again so that we can enjoy good conversation fine food and a glass of wine.
You will be missed Tom….like all that have gone before you, you are now with the Creator of All. Blessings.
Richard
