A Starry Night
As I light this candle I can still hear your soft voice in the middle of a starry night,
whispering words of comfort to me,
your first Grandchild from your first child, from your very first sight.
A shining star you are oh so bright,
infinite blessings you showered me,
most inside of me...... some for eyes to see,
By starry night a shining light, by day a sun beam behind a fluttering sailing kite.
You will always be my....our sheer delight.
But the most of all blessings you bestowed to me is my beautiful mother you gave me,
This I thank thee for all eternity.
We will always walk by your side Grandma, with great strength and almighty might,
may this candle burn ever so bright,
as we love you forever & we will always be waiting for your soft whispers in the middle of a starry night.

Aunty Liela your zest for life and your smile was infectious. You loved to laugh and you made people around you happy. I will miss you terribly and miss our laughs and fun times. You are gone too soon but our loss is God’s gain. Keep smiling and spread the cheer up there.

I will miss Powah. I had one of the sweetest relationships one can have with an aunt. When my mother passed away I arrived at her doorstep looking for a connection I was missing in my life. She graciously and kindly took me under her wing. We shared many meals discussing her childhood adventures with my father who was her eldest brother. They were close and she shared many stories of their childhood years growing up in Bengal. These stories along with her wonderful cassava pone, coconut buns, plait bread, black cake and all manner of cooking made her kitchen the place to be. I loved visiting her. We could spend hours discussing food. She was an exceptional cook and baker.
Powah had many talents and she was basically a self taught person. Aside from her cooking skills she was also an excellent seamstress, knitter and gardner. She was a multitasker and I enjoyed watching her perform these tasks with care, knowledge and grace. I discovered we had many of the same habits and likes in our daily lives and it was a privilege and joy to visit with her. She always made me laugh each time I left her kitchen became she would ask me when I would be returning! I would laugh and say to her “Powah I haven’t left yet!” I would have to promise to return soon and if I didn’t I would certainly hear about it. She once told me I should visit everyday! She was serious and meant every word. I have a few things she made for me that I pass by in my house several times a day. I am so grateful for the memories that go with them.
She made Zara and myself two beautiful aprons. I told Powah that we both felt these aprons were too nice for everyday use. She told me she would make me another one. Sadly, she will be taking that skill with her and I will not have the pleasure of receiving that apron. I will have to treasure the one I now own. Powah, I promise I will wear it in the spirit it was given and think of you wherever I cook.
Wow! No more ginger beer, plait bread or black cake at Christmastime. You will be missed! I think we were all a little bit spoiled and took your talents for granted.
Dear aunt May you Rest In Peace.
