Obituary of Mr. Glenroy Matthew
Glenroy Adonis Rutherford Matthew was born in Freetown, Antigua on June 22nd 1945. He met Yvette in St Johns, Antigua and they moved to England where Glen worked as a chef while pursuing his education, becoming a chartered accountant. Glen and Yvette got married in England in 1970. After 20 years on the south coast in England, they moved to Canada with their three children, joining his sister Irma to explore new opportunities.
He loved gardening and the great outdoors. He took the family camping when the children were younger, taught his son how to fish, and spent lots of his time in his (and his children’s) gardens over the years. He also loved cooking and often whipped up food from his garden. Sunday morning omelets served with avocado and plantain are a staple in the Matthew household before church.
His faith was very strong, and after retiring he obtained his Masters in Theology at the University of Toronto. He was always active in the church, serving as a warden, and in other ministries. He was an integral part of the church community, and found strength and resolve in this faith up to his final moments.
Glen was a charismatic and social man, loving a good chat. Anyone interested could expect a full tour of his garden; his pride and joy. He loved to travel, and never stopped learning about new countries, cultures and languages. He studied French after retirement, and loved sharing memories of his European and Middle Eastern travels. He regularly returned to England to visit his sister and youngest daughter who moved to London for her studies. His final trip to England was for the birth of his grandson Aiden, which brought him great joy.
His warm laugh and spirited commentary on anything from sports matches to James Bond movies will be greatly missed. Glenroy is survived by his loving wife Yvette, children Faye. Neil and Dionne, his siblings Lyda, Irma, Vanessa and Ulric, and countless friends and family here and abroad.
