Obituary of Linda Mary Johnstone

Linda (Cassell) Johnstone - 

Peacefully on September 30th at Scarborough General Hospital. Cherished wife and companion of Ian, beloved mother and mentor of Rachel (Dave) and grandson Duncan (Hayley); Adam (Jessica); Daniel (Karen) and grandchildren Brandon and Shannon; Naomi (Rick and his daughter Grace). Predeceased by parents and brother Peter; survived by brother Michael (Jane), sister-in-law Jeanette, brother Bernard (Kerry) and their respective families. Born in Birmingham, England in 1941, Linda attended St. Paul's School Edgbaston and later studied mathematics at the University of Nottingham. It was there that she met Ian. Married in 1963, they both took up careers in the relatively new field of Information Technology at ICL Nottingham, for a short time sitting at facing desks. She became a full-time mother from 1964 to 1974 during which time the growing family moved to Jamaica and later to Canada. In Toronto, Linda resumed her IT career, working at the ICAO and later for the Law Society of Upper Canada, there becoming Director of Information Systems. Over the years, Linda became an active member and made friends in several professional and other groups (CIPS, TUG, Bruce Trail Conservancy, Fung Loy Kok Tai Chi). In 2015, Linda was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Despite the blessing of a 13-month remission and relief provided by ongoing treatment, the disease finally overcame her gallant heart and spirit. Her family offer their sincere thanks to the physicians and staff at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Scarborough General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to either of these would be greatly appreciated. In accordance with Linda's wishes, a private cremation has taken place. Friends are invited to join her family at a gathering to celebrate her life and exchange memories, to be held at the Westin Prince Hotel, 900 York Mills Rd., on October, Saturday 28th from 2 to 5 p.m.
