Obituary of George Flint

FLINT, George Elliot — RCAF, U.S.F.A, AIIC, FIIC, WWII Veteran. A solider, husband, father, a Man of Character! George passed away peacefully February 22, 2017, in his 91st year. Predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Margaret Jean Gray, who passed away in 2009. George was born April 22, 1926 in Highland Park, Michigan, to his loving parents Grace and Lionel. George was a father of 3: Michelle (Barrie), Randall (Debbie) and Andrew. Grandfather of 11: Laurie (Colin), Amy (Andy), Michael (Lisa), Matthew (Jessica), Angela (Jamie), Michael (Leslie), Lindsay (Andrew), Rachel, William, Rebecca and Emilee. Great-grandfather of 8: Kyla, Rylie, Dylan, Elizabeth, Isla, Aiden, Isabella and Clementine. Also survived by his brothers Richard, Donald, David and Douglas and their families.George was a grade 13 student having attended Malvern Collegiate and Scarborough Collegiate (R.H. King Academy) when he enlisted in the RCAF on April 21 1944, the day before his eighteenth birthday. He was selected for air crew training as a Flight Engineer and was sent to the training base at Pennfield Ridge in New Brunswick. After several months the government announced that flight training was to be halted and those in the program would be discharged from the service. Anxious to go overseas he took advantage of his dual citizenship and transferred to the U.S. Army. After intensive training at bases throughout the southern and eastern United States, he was sent to Europe. He was then assigned to the United States Forces Austria, Vienna Area Command (G 5-Logistics). He received his final discharge from the Army on December 31, 1946. George spent his entire working career with a member company of the RSA Insurance group holding a number of positions up through management, including overseeing operations based out of Edmonton, Alberta, in the 1970s. In 1956, George was a member of the 1st graduation class of 33 students in Ontario of the Insurance Institute of Canada and was awarded the designation of Fellow of the Institute of Canada by examination. He retired in August 1989 on pension from RSA after celebrating 40 years with the company. After just one year of "retirement" he became a consultant, started his own business and completed 17 years as an information officer with the Insurance Bureau of Canada.His passions focused upon cottage life in the Haliburton Highlands, golf, reading, boating, fine dining and together with his wife Margaret in their later years, travel throughout the Caribbean. Time spent with his grandchildren and growing number of great-grandchildren were some of his greatest joys. George will be remembered for his courage, devotion, love of his wife and family and enduring strength of character that defined his generation. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 3, 2017 at the Ogden Funeral Home, 4164 Sheppard Ave. E. (east of Kennedy), Scarborough, from 4-8 p.m. Funeral Service to be held on Saturday, March 4th at 1 p.m. with a reception to follow.
