I remember Debbie as a beautiful and young woman, her blond hair blowing in the wind as we drove to Wasaga Beach to her family cottage for the weekend in my little MG sports car with the radio playing Chum FM. (It was the late 60s and early 70s.) Debbie was my first girlfriend and love after I moved to Canada from Scotland. Debbie was smart, fun, caring, sexy (with apologies to Kieth her husband), loved her family (especially her Uncle Moe and Aunt Gladys), crazy about her dog (Tippy), (she also drove like a maniac, but that is another story), and very beautiful. My family liked Debbie more than they liked me, not that I can blame them. She charmed everyone she met. She had a smile that would light up a room. We were a couple through out University, I went to the University of Western Ontario and she attended the UoT. Debbie's beauty was more than skin deep, she was driven and knew what she wanted to do with her life and that was to be a teacher and to make a difference in people's lives and she did. But I do not remember her as teacher, I remember the fun, laughter and great times we had together. The infectious laugh, the twinkle in her eye, the beautiful smile and her long gorgeous hair...well they melted my heart. But we changed and grew and we grew apart. We lost track of each other but she did reach out to me on the death on my Mum and Dad. She was that type of person. She will be missed. She was and is part of who I am and I hope that I had brought some love and joy to her life when we were young. I know she is in heaven with her Mum and Dad, her Uncle Moe and Aunt Gladys and with all the dogs she loved so much.
