Obituary of Victor John Bulger

VICTOR JOHN BULGER RCHA WO2 (Ret'd). "Once a gunner, always a gunner." Ubique Born in Peterborough, Ontario on 30 October 1921 to Mary Loretta (nee Grady) and Thomas Dennis Bulger of Cobourg, Ontario, predeceased by siblings Thomas (Audrey), Margaret, Agnes, James, Murray (Jane), Mary and Theresa, and cousin Jim. Beloved husband of Betty (nee Arnold); loving father of Victor (Yeta), Susan, Brian (Karen), Patricia and Barbara; and Bumpa to 11 grandchildren: Joshua, Amanda, Lara, Mathew, Jamie, Sean, Lauren, Ryan, Celia, Tralee and Brendan. Dear brother-in-law of Marjorie Bulger and Bob Murray, cousin of Ann McDonnell and uncle of many nieces and nephews. Victor will be missed by his close friends, members of the RCHA Sergeants Association, graduates of the Soldier Apprentice Program and Apeldoorn family. He was very respectful of his friendship with Brigadier General H.E. Brown. Victor enlisted in the Canadian Army at 17 years of age on 26 August 1939 and spent the next six years overseas during WWII. Victor was proud of being one of 'The D-Day Dodgers', the Allied servicemen who were involved in the invasion of Italy and of being one of the Liberators of Holland. He remained in the Canadian Army after the War for another 19 years. Upon his retirement from the Army in January 1965, Victor worked for the Imperial Life Assurance Company. In 1968 he worked for Gradon Pamater General Insurance, and in 1969 purchased H. Ouellette Insurance in Millbrook, Ontario, where Victor continued to work for another 28 years until 1996. He retired at 75 years of age. Victor enjoyed his many years working in Millbrook. He appreciated the patronage of his clients and thoroughly enjoyed the many friendships he made, especially the daily 'Senate Coffee Meetings' at the Deli. Victor was a proud Canadian and a prolific writer of his army experiences. He was the spark behind the creation of and a major contributor to "RCHA--Right of the Line: An Anecdotal History of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery from 1871." Victor was also proud to have been an active participant for several years in 'The Memory Project', wherein he visited schools commemorating Remembrance Day and spoke to students about his wartime experiences. Part of his personal war history can be found on 'The Memory Project' website. Victor's family was very important to him as was his Irish heritage. Special heartfelt thanks to the E.R. and 9th Floor Cardiac staff of the Scarborough Hospital, the K1W staff of George Hees Veterans Residence and all the chaplains and priests for their extraordinary care and compassion. God bless you. Visitation to be held on Wednesday, September 3rd from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Ogden Funeral Home, 4164 Sheppard Avenue East, Scarborough. The Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, September 4th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence the Martyr, 2210 Lawrence Avenue East, Scarborough. Interment for Victor will be held on Friday, September 5, 2014 in St. Michael's Cemetery in Cobourg where he will join his parents and ancestors.
